polyurethane over vinyl

Grainbelt

Recommended Posts

I built a cornhole game and painted with Viking purple and gold. I am thinking of buying self adhesive vinyl viking head decals to put on them then spray a coat of poly over the works. I am wondering if anyone knows if the poly will affect the vinyl. Thanks

I wouldn't think you'd have a problem especially if you used a water based poly.

You can make your own decals.

Print them on regular paper.

Get a coat or two of the poly on your cornhole.

After that has dried, use the poly as an adhesive for your decal.

Get a coat on and lay the decal in place. Brush that in and let dry.

Now put a coat or two over the decal. The poly over the decal will make the colors pop!

Of coarse test for any reaction of ink and poly before you do this.

I am going to disagree a bit as I spray with waterbased products every day and IMHO they are much more forgiving and due to the lack of petroleum based solvents they have a lower chance of causing problems with the vinyl bleeding into the finish.

If anything i would try something like a spray shellac on a test piece first to see if the alcohol in it causes any bleeding or distortion and if not then use that as a sealer but my first choice would still be Wb.
