My central air isnt working properly. it forms a puddle in the utility room under the furnace. Anyone have any ideas what problem I might have? I am not too familiar with these systems.

Thanks

Could be plugged drain, could be frozen coil. If there is a big ball of ice where the lines come out of the plenum, run the "fan only" to thaw out coil, that is probably the result of a dirty filter. Another possibility is the coil drain pan has rusted through, not good.

good luck.

bloc004, I had the same problem with mine...In MY experience, It happened to be a Lennox unit and the tray that catches the water under the 'A'-coil (inside the furnace) rusted through. DO get it replaced SOON as the water is now dripping on your heat exchanger and that will rust quickly! I got on it quickly otherwise it would've been a new furnace AND air conditioner all at once. If the unit is low on freon, it can cause it to form an ice ball as noted above. If you are able to shut the system off, run the fan for a couple hours will allow air to blow across the evap and melt the ice. Then you need to make sure the system is charged, if not it will happen again. Also as noted check to make sure the pan is not overfilling or rusted out.

bloc, check to see if there is condensate coming out of the tube or pipe going to the drain from your furnace. If not the drain is plugged and needs to be cleaned out. Did you just change your filter recently after a long time without changing it? You need to have airflow and having a dirty filter will block air movement causing ice build up. Is your outside unit (condenser) icing up as well? If the drain is fine and your filter is clean then it is low on freon and needs to be charged. In this case you have a leak somewhere and it should be fixed. If the A-coil inside is iced up you probably don't have too much air coming out of your registers. Run the fan only for a while if there is ice build up and then try your air again to see what happens. Check the condensate drain first though!
