bogwalker
A good guide is the best teacher you can get. Who else runs dozens of baits and helps fill dozens of tags each year. The secret is getting a GOOD guide.
cherokee
bogwalker I did for my 1st year (didn't get one) and must say I learned the ropes. Ever since I have done it myself and find it very rewarding.
pulleye16
A guide can be very resourceful if you find one that is willing to show you and help you out, talk to them before hand and ask them what you want to know and see if they will help you. Some guides (more as in fishing) will just get you fish and not always help you out in regards to "setting up" or what to look for. WE've never had a bear guide and have done very well but we also knew people with experience so we had them help us out the first time out. what ever way you choose, NO gaurantes are included. bogwalker
Like any profession there are good and bad. There is a big difference between some guy who dumps food in the woods and a pro. With the chore of obtaining, storing, hauling and dispensing bait bear hunting is not cheap. Add the cost of fuel and the money spent goes way up. Whether to you through others or directly. I have read some great information posted here by guides. You may not want to pay for their knowledge but you are benefiting from it. They work hard and deserve some credit.
Boar
Umm... dont really know where your going with this, I to have read alot of great info from guides an from non-guides on here an have always expressed a thank you to them an all that have contributed. I had never said I was'nt willing to pay for their knowledge on a guided trip, as of now I havent hunted with a guide. The great info shared on this site is always aprreciated, alot of the info I have collected over the years has been from personal experience, reading, talking to the scent makers that I buy from an from guides themselves an have alway made it clear that I appreciate their time an info. Random guy
Us guides learn from these boards also. Once you or I stop learning or worse yet stop listening we might as well get a good recliner to stay in. As far as people who use guides. Some are newcomers looking to learn the tricks of the trade and I welcome those guys. Some are guys that love to hunt but just can't bait due distance, work or schedules and the guide does the work for them. Of course a small fraction of clientele is the trophy hunter. These are men and women looking for every advantage and utilizing every resource in attempts to harvest a trophy class animal. As for bear guides bear knowledge is third right behind time management and financial planning.
Boar
Have had in mind to someday book a hunt with you jonny, your hunt package cant be beat, heck I'd probabley save money by not doing it myself. Superbee also tossed me an offer that I really want to attend. Definatley have great options to consider, time away is a major factor for me thou. WhiskeyWoods
Depends, on term "guide",I've hunted bear for 2 years now and gotten 2 (2006 and 2009). I have the best teacher in the world...My uncle. He has been hunting them for 25 yrs and seems to know the little tricks and trades.
bogwalker
How much does a guide cost? And what do you look for in one? I don't know what area you plan to hunt but Beaver Tail Outdoors has been featured on nationwide bear hunting TV shows every year for the last 5-6 years. Top notch outfit.
