Roof and Ceiling in the Wheel house

McGurk

Recommended Posts

Due to some damage, I have to redo the roof and ceiling in my fishhouse this summer. It is currently a mostly flat asphalt roof, and wood panelling covering 3" of foamboard insulation.

First off, I've always thought the house was too dark, and would like to brighten it up. It had the natural colored wood paneling up there before, and I think I'll use a white material this time. Should I just get luan and paint it, or get some 4x8 white-dry erase boards or something like that? I think I'll only need 2 sheets, so cost won't be a huge issue.

Secondly, I'd like to do a rubber roof, but I only think I'll need half a sheet as it is sold at Fleet Farm. Is anyone interested in buying the other half? Another option is buying and splitting the costs up front, and giving each other help in applying it, as it seems like more work than one guy can do. Reply back here if you're interested.

Thanks in advance for all advice, and any and all input is welcome!

Thanks for the offer, LRG, and I think my roof + overhang will need 8x12. If the rolls are 10'x20', I'll need over half of one of those and should have a piece that's 8'x10' leftover.

If someone has a smaller house that needs roofing, I'd gladly pay the heavy half of this deal. Sounds like LRG may have some options, too, and be sure to hit him up for those if they work!

I was just discussing this with a friend this weekend. When I bought the materials for my roof, I went to Menards, and bought their pre-cut rolls. I am pretty sure my friend said that Fleet Farm sells it by the running foot off the roll, 10' wide for $6.50 per running foot.

Hope this helps.

I stopped by Menards today, and found that they have a sale going on their rubber membrane sheets. They have the 10'x20' for $70. Not a bad price, and it's folded in half (5' wide) and rolled up, so it's pretty easy to manage. They also sell they contact cements and everything else for it. Now I just need to get my repairs done so I can do it!

Did you get the glue in the can or the pail? If it is the can, I'd highly recommend returning it for the pail. It is 10x's easier to work with.

Yes it is I used the stuff in the pail this spring> the stuff in the pail is latex and you only need to apply it to the wood surface or they recomend using partical board.

Thanksm, guys. The guy at Menards said that the Latex bucket is the way to go too; more forgiving and able to be pulled and relaid if a wrinkle forms. I've got to get the ceiling figured out first, and will give updates as it goes down.

Saw this post and went to menards last night to buy a roll of the roofing. Forest Lake menards has a sale price of $99 not $70. I left a bit dissapointed. O well, plenty of shopping time left.

I was able to pick up a cull steel entry door slab for $5.00 though.

They have 3 or 4 left if anyone is interested. One 32" wide and the rest were 34" I think.

Gus, for $30 I think I'd be calling around to other Menards to get it price-matched. I was at the Menards in Burnsville, and they had a purple printout with all of the prices on it. $30 is a huge difference in price when you are talking about something under $100. Worth a shot. Good Luck!

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
