Texan wanting to visit Wisconsin

Recommended Posts

Howdy-

My wife and I want to take a vacation up to Wisconsin with my parents sometime in mid October. None of us have ever been up that way and we could use all of the advice possible. My father and I have heard about the great streams for fly fishing as well as the Great Lakes. We would like to get some fishing in while our wives can do some sightseeing and shopping. Maybe throw some golf in for good measure. I have been to the Wisconsin tourism site, but it breaks down the state into quadrants. Does anyone have a good 4 day itinerary?

Thanks in advance.

If you've only got four days, I'd definetly look to the south shore of Lake Superior. I don't fish up that way myself so I hope others will chime in, but I would start looking at Superior. I know there are some really good streams that run into the big lake east of there. I believe the salmon run in October.

Bayfield is a beautifull area that is probably worth a look also. It's a pretty popular tourist destination, but in October only the locals will be left. Again, not sure about fishing other than the islands in the area if you were willing to take out a charter.

It's a beautiful part of the world. If you decided to stay somewhere near Superior or it's twin port town of Duluth, MN a trip up the north shore of Lake Superior will be something you'll remember the rest of your life.

Good luck!

Wouldn't be afraid to look into Jim Hudson's Guide Service who is one our sponsored guides if you head up that way. Great guy and knows that area better than most. There are so many opportunities in Northern Wisconsin to have a great time. Minocqua, Eagle River, Rhinelander, Hayward, Duluth the list goes on. Great attractions, fishing opportunities, shopping for the ladies.

Good suggestions already. Depending on when you come in October, you can catch AppleFest in Bayfield, WI. My wife and I rarely miss it as the leaves are changing, temps are cooling off and the people of Bayfield are great hosts. You can hop the ferry to Madeline Island and take a walk on the beaches and check out a couple nice restaurants. It' a very nice couple hour drive from Duluth/Superior. The North Shore rivers should be fishable and the Brule River is close as well. Good luck and let us know what you decide.

The salmon run should be on at that time so hit some of the Great Lake Tributaries. Other fishing opportunities rely somewhat on the equipment you have. October is a great time to fish muskie and walleye, but it can get cold and fishing for those species isn't for everyone (both require a lot of patience).

Bayfield county would be my choice . you have an abundance of streams from the Iron and Flag in the Port wing area, numerous streams from Herbster to Cornucopia such as the Bark, Cranberry ,Siskiwit and many other streams and creeks which flow from Lake Superior.Plenty of Golf course's near by as well. many of the towns have gift shop but if you want to take a hours ride south Hayward Wi is loaded if its shopping your looking for.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
