headlamps

There are some great headlamp combos out or coming out soon. They have the option of LEDs or a focused bulb. 85% of the time, a person can get by with the LEDs, but there are times I need or like a bright beam. Check out what the different teams are using in the EcoChallenge on USA network. I've seen them wearing Black Diamond, Princeton, and Petzl brand headlamps. All three are great brands with fine products. Do some research on these brands and see which one meets your needs and budget.

I used a Tec lamp last year during the ice fishing season. It was excellent for everything I wanted to use it for.

I even placed the tec lamp around my 100# propane tank, and put it on flashing mode and left my fish house on Mille lacs, nearly 1 mile from shore and could easily see the light flashing on shore to be able to find my house and allow others to find my house easily.

Its a good unit, but if you wanna see tip-ups, but a big cordless spot light for that.

I just switched to a dual lamp myself... I love it. The Tec works well for close up work, but when out on the open water at night I needed a more focused beam. The dual lamp I got does both, and it's awesome. The only setback is the the large, remote battery container. It rests on the back of your noggin, but hasn't bothered me that much. The one I got is called the Black Diamond I think.

Check out the one from Cabella's (their own brand). I have one and it's great. It has high/low beams, a rechargeable battery pack plus charger, and an spare battery pack for alkaline batteries. I've taken the spare battery pack with me but have never had to use it - just use the rechargeable pack.

The Princeton Tec Predator and Predator Pro have the red lens you can buy sepratly and also an LED module but I like the ability to recharge with the Cabelas model.

I need a headlamp. LED or Krypton? What are your opinoins on either?
Also how far out do the LED headlamps shine, not further than the krypton, right? I know they are pretty bright.
Thanks

It depends on what you want to use it for. I have a LED and it works great for walking in the dark like going to my deerstand or things like that. Also works great for night fishing, can see everything in front of you real well. My bro in law has one with a single beam, he complains that it doesn't work real well for night fishing but he could shine it on something 50 feet away if he wanted.

Yeah, I know about the Princeton Tec but what I'd like to know is the difference between the beams of light that each give off. I've read elsewhere on this site that the LED's are kind of like headlights in fog. Which would be nice for wader fishing and throwing the dekes out in the morning but don't know if it's bright enough for something I'd regularly use a flashlight for, like checking tip-ups from the fish house or shining deer (kidding).

The LEDs on the Princeton Tec work great for close in work or walking in the woods and keeping a trail visible.

They don't work well to check on tip-ups at a distance, unless they have reflective flags. They just aren't targeted enough.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
