Problems with trolling motor

Jim Uran

Question

I've got a maxxum 54lb thrust, yes it's a little bit older but not too old. Anyway, the problem is it cuts out when I turn it to the left. No it's not auto pilot, it's cable steering.

It runs fine when I turn it to the right or straight ahead, but as soon as I get left of straigh ahead it cuts out.

The indication arrow still stays lit up and I ran through the wires on the foot pedal with a tester and nothinig lost power when the motor cut out.

I'm thinking something may be pinched in the shaft or, heck I don't know.

Anyone have any ideas, or what I should tear apart first, and how to go about it!!! Thanks

I would take the top cover off and check the were the wires connect to the circuit board and look at it while you are moving it back and forth. It might be a simple fix or not but I think you will spot your problem. If it is in the lower part of the trolling motor you might be better off taking it to someone but I just don't think that is were your problem is.

Sounds like a loose wire on the circuit board, had the same problem, there is a registered Minn Kota service guy in walker who is great and not to pricy. I know it is a drive but he has a day or two turn around on his work. email me if you want his name since I am not sure if we can post that on here.

Could be a broken wire from the control board to the potentiometer.

crazy WHAT? grin

Well I took the top off that was fine, I took the lower unit apart and the wires tested good, even when I turned it to the left. Must be something bad.... There is an authorized Minnkota repair shop in Detroit Lakes I'll be taking it to, better than buying a new one.

$300, still better than buying a new one, it's a good trolling motor. But now I've got bigger problems grincrazygrin

I ran the head into the pole on the dock and just cracked that son of a gun right in half... almost ripped the head right off, oh well lol!!! I guess I'll be on the market looking for a used one soon!!
