Larry FlatCaster
Fish... there are some bacteria solutions available commercially.Throw some bait in to get it started. It takes some time... the warmer the better. Last year was a little tough.

wastewaterguru
Even tougher to get the filter seeded with cooler water temps. My biofilter doesn't really start working well each year until the bait tank is around 75 degrees.....
Scott K
What do you use for a carbon filter? Just something from a pet/aquarium store?
Larry FlatCaster
Thats what I used to use. I might go back to doing that. I've done a little research... but need to do more to find larger quantities at a cost effective means, with out too much hassle.

StillwaterAaron
Wow I missed over an entire page of this and missed out on some good info.Larry I am horrible about changing water and that is one reason I use the carbon. My tank is so clear right now it is great but I also only have 4 small bullies in there right now. I plan to take a pic of my tank but have been so busy. What do you use for a carbon filter? Just something from a pet/aquarium store? The least expensive way that I use is bulk activated carbon just dumped into the bottom of my filter. For my filter I use a water filter similar to what you would put in your house with the clear case that you add a filter to. It is much more elaborate than I needed but I had all the parts except a couple connections on hand so the total cost was about 5 bucks. There are so many options and ways you can make a filter and bait tank that will work great. One thing I like about my filter that I never thought about before is it works with very cold water keeping it clear and smelling not bad.
