ac777
Hi, getting a garden ready for my fiancee, and there is a tree in the middle of it. I like trees, but Im not sure if i want to keep this one. Its only about 15 feet tall or so, so it would be easy to rip out with a skid loader. I am just wondering, are there any pros to having a tree in or near a garden? Should I take it out? I know it leaves a lot of leaves in the fall, and I am not sure what kind of tree it is, ash maybe? Thanks for the input.
croixflats
This a vegetable garden or a perennial garden? If its a vegetable garden it going to block out needed sun and also soak up needed nutrients so I would remove it.If its a perennial garden a tree can be beneficial as it would protect the plants from the heat of the day but then you will half to plan the garden for light shade tolerant plants. If its an ash tree I dont think you should be to concerned over the tree soaking up a lot of the nutrient but if its a Maple watch out when that thing matures it will suck the life out of any plant close by. ac777
Its a veggie garden, I can say for sure the tree isn't a maple, pretty sure its an ash. But I think I might take it out anyways.
Grainbelt
I would get rid of it so the veggie plants can get as much sun as possible. I got rid of a tree next to one of my gardens and it was for the better. Shaded gardens get sparse growth and production.
Fins-n-feathers
If you are going to be planting stuff, the roots may turn out to be a problem.
ac777
ya, we decided we are going to remove it. I'll have to take the skid steer over and rip it out one of these days. Thanks for the input everyone.
LightningBG
Cant you just move the garden? Seems ashamed to lose a tree that big. Those roots are still going to be down there even if the trunk is gone.

We might end up digging it out with the back hoe and transplanting it, we've transplanted bigger trees like that before.
