bak2MN
Does anyone know where to get a wood duck house?
0 i'majigger
Contact the Cormorant Sportsman Club, they usually build some every spring to give away. Try calling Layden Jacobson in Audubon he should be able to give you the info you need.

0 EricD
Here's a question for you. My son built one of these at Woody Camp a number of years ago. Like any young kid excited about wildlife, he really wanted to put it up someplace but we didn't have a place to put it. This past winter we bought a cabin and, late though it is, I thought it would be a good place to put it. He's dragging himself around Afghanistan these days and, when I hear from him, he seems to get nostalgic about the good old days. Tough to hear from a 19 year old kid. I thought I'd put it up and take a picture and send it to him. How and where do I put it up? I've never seen any wood ducks out that way and I don't know much about how they nest. How close to the water and is there any point in doing it?
0 eyehunter
Absolutely, put it up!! Even if it's too late to get a nesting hen in there this year, do it just for the picture that you just explained above. That picture of your sons house nailed to a tree in front of the lake would mean more to him than wether or not there were ducks in it. My folks have one nailed to an oak tree that is in their front yard right next to the lake and there is a duck that just went in there last week, so if you hurry and get it up you just might get one in there yet this year. But like I said before, you won't be able to see a duck in it in the picture, so put it up, take the pic, send it to your son and tell him that when he gets home he'll be able to watch many ducks being raised up in the house. One more thing.....will you thank him from me personally for his service to his country?? Even though he does not know me, please tell him thank you from me. 0 EricD
Thanks for the link. Lot's of good information there. I'll put up the house this weekend. I'll extend your best wishes, eyehunter, when I hear from him again. He's with the 82nd special troops battalion. I don't hear from him often but, when I do, I'll share the conversation and the photo.
0 TIR Life
I have a couple of wood duck houses on the resort and we have had some interesting inhabitants over the years. The coolest was a sawhet owl. I had to look it up because I didn't know what it was. I love watching the houses in the spring and seeing the hen fly in to that little hole. If you put duck houses up you will never regret it. After you get the duck house up consider a bat house they are really interesting and full all summer.
0 deacon
Put it up you never know. I think the squirrels use mine (about) five of them but every now and then a wood duck uses. Have put up a bat house but cannot tell if being used. Did put on sunny side of tree about 15 ft up?
0 bak2MN
I was told to put on sun side for the am but afternoon sun can fry the young and hen.
