Snowmobile Storage Maintenance

Hookmaster

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 1999 Polaris 2-up last weekend for ice fishing. I was tired of not getting out the last 2 winters with all the snow and having to stay on resort roads. The owner put Sea Foam in the gas and I know I need to fog the cylinders. What else do I need to do? Grease all the zerks? What kind of grease? Would marine grease be OK? Do I prop up the rear end to take the weight off the track suspension? Anything else?

-wash the sled down, try to get all dirt and grease off it

-grease all the zerts on it. Any Low temp grease works, the arctic cat brand they sell for there sleds is white, i believe its a low temp white lithium grease

-put some fuel sta-bil in the tank and fill the tank to its rated capacity

-drain the carb, i usually just ran the sled with sta-bil in it.

-fog the engine by spraying it into the intake or down the spark plugs

-put a clean cloth in the exhaust pipe. I heard steel wool works cuz rats wont eat thru it but at the same time steel wool rust so does that speed up rust on the pipe? idk to each is their own tho.

-prop up the back end with a stand, if u got some scrap metal u can easily make one and skip the 75$ they charge for one.

-cover and store indoors if possible

hope that helps

Matt

I'll add disconnect the battery and give it a good charge. Store the battery where you can give it a periodic charge throughout the summer. All else I'd say was pretty spot on. I would be careful when washing though. Make sure anything that moves gets a good coat of grease after washing. You don't want it to rust up over the summer. Steering components especially.

This helps alot Matt - the only thing I am unaware of is "fogging" the cylinders.

I get the concept, but what do you use? 2 cycle oil? Stabil?

When you take out the spark plugs to fog the cylinders, use the straw that comes with the can so you can stick it down in the holes and rotate it to spray the cylinder walls.

Pull the engine over several times to stroke the pistons, then repeat the spray pattern once. Then put your plugs back in.

Why would you drain the carb and then fill the tank? If you are going to have the system empty (which I think just invites drying out of rubber seals) then empty it all. Otherwise run seafoam in your gas and run it so it is in the carb and then just fog the carb and the cylinders and leave it.
