Dog saved a kid?

A young child was walking down the middle of the street this morning. A car came down the road (way too fast) - my dog, which never goes on the street- ran up to the child and "pushed" the child to the side of the road.

Kinsey then barked at me to notice the child and we walked him home. Do you think she knew what she was doing? She had that "I am proud" trot on the way back to the house (if your a dog owner you know what I mean).

Yes I do. When my daughter was 5 (she is now 32) I was on the river below our house fishing salmon. I was about a 100' down stream from her when she slipped and fell into the river and immediately disappeared underwater. I dropped everything and ran in that direction to dive in and save her I hoped. By the time I was half way there my 8 year old black lab was pushing her into to the shore bank which I quickly reached down and jerked her out and rushed her home, scared and wet but fine. Never was a doubt in my mind that Sheba saved her life.

They understand/recognize more than we think they do. Its limited, but its obviously more than what they can communicate to us.

I haven't had any life saving experiences like that with my dogs. However my Lab, who is the sweetest dog in the world and who wouldn't hurt a fly, once and only once got really aggressive when a hooded man came across the road directly towards my wife while she was walking him. Needless to say, the man decided to turn around and go back the other direction. That's the only time we have ever heard him growl like he meant business. And he often goes right up to strangers with the tail wagging. He either sensed something about the guy or that my he made my wife nervous, not sure which.

Cool story Duck Dog.

My dad had a tale; pheasant hunting alone in Iowa, he was crossing a pasture when a bull charged him. His AWS distracted the bull, while he got through the fence. He then just lifted the bottom wire and called her in. He swore she knew exactly what she was doing.

Give your dog a pat for me.

I have a nephew with mental and physical disabilities. When he was small, he figured out how to open the front door. My sister's border collie jumped their fence, ran out into the street where my nephew was, grabbed his shirt, and brought him back to the door.

That was the one and only time that dog jumped the fence.
