I dont know about Hummingbird for sure but assume there is a monthly fee because with my Garmin unit you have to buy a subscription through XM satellite, what ever their calling thenselves, and depending on what subscription you get it can run around $10 to $50 a month.

I have not done this yet as I cant afford the antenna right know and I'm thinking of adding another chartplotter to the boat.

To many wants and its hard to prioritize.

I think the xm satellite weather stuff is really cool and HB, Lowrance and Garmin all have some great functionality and displays with it.

There is a monthly fee, plus the cost of the antenna.

I think satellite weather is good way to go if you're on the Great Lakes or on saltwater, but I'm not sure how useful it would be, or how often it would be useful, for in-land freshwater lakes.

I use the weather band channels on my VHF radio, or the browser on my cell phone, when I want updates on the weather. It seems like a more economical way to go.
