Weekend Limit Question

Great Site, I do a lot of lurking but don't post that often. A group of us are heading up north this weekend to URL and LOW. I know the limits on each lake are different, 4 walleyes below the slot on URL and 4 walleyes with a combo of 4 more Saugers on LOW, but if we catch and keep 4 walleyes from URL, are we only able to take 4 saugers from LOW the next day if we have the 4 walleyes back at the lodge from URL?

We are hoping to cook the fish from URL on the ice but if guys head out early and take their fish with them and put them in the freezer at the resort for taking home they are limited how many they can keep correct? Basically I guess I need to know how many fish I can have in possession on Sunday...which I think is 4 walleyes but want to verify with the experts.

Thanks!

4 walleyes in possession at any time and also a cleaned carcas is considered a walleye in possession. Once you properly disposs of the cleaned fish on shore you are good to catch another fish. Walleyes in the freezer at the resort are counted towards your 4 walleyes.

cm1977,

You may want to double check. Even if you catch, clean, and "dispose of cleaned fish on shore" as fivebucks states, those fish still count towards your daily limit.

Now the tricky part. Can you eat your 4 URL fish then go up to LOW and get another 4 fish. LOW has their on rules.

I would double check at the resorts that you are going out of.

You would hate to be the guy that gets fined for overlimit and gets bashed on here for being from WI....

Thats the gray area, better have the legal limit of fish for the lake or area you are fishing. If You take four eyes from red an goto LOW an left them on shore or at a resort, you canot catch any more eyes, only saugers. If you arrive at red with four eyes from LOW you cant keep anymore eyes at all since that lake limit is 4.d check them in with the resort cause their slot is defferent. An Now if you leave red an go home an stop of at another inland lake that supports thhe MN 6 limit then only two can be taken. I think I'm close on this. If not then I need to read better. Boar

Devil’s advocate. Why can’t I keep two red lake walleyes and four LOW walleyes for a state position limit of six fish? Yes I agree with not having them on the lake but once off a specific water who’s to say were said fish came from. I read it as the restricted limit and slot is for a specific body of water. I did not read any where in the reg’s that restricted your possession limit to the most restricted body of water fished.

What Im saying is If you have fish in your possesion on shore near a specific body of water youd better play the restriction game for that body of water. If you get checked what do ya think is gonna happen? Some one once told me that if you leave LOW with six eyes an your going home, an you off the ice you are now legal with the inland water limit. May be so Many miles from LOW. But if your in the vicinity of LOW with six eyes an get checked, your busted. CO's dont play the "You cant prove where I caught them" Game.I understand with what your saying an agree. But Again with the gray area. Boar

Like boar said, I am sure the warden will pinch you if you have 4 walleyes on shore at either LOW or Red and then keep 2 more out on the water - and he should cause the limit on those lakes is 4. Now if you fished Lake X, which has a 6 fish limit and you have proof that you caught them there(ie: packaged and labeled by a resort on the lake) then I believe you could catch up to 6 walleyes in combination. That's my 3cents.

The way I understand it is... the DNR can test those fish and usually determine what body of water they were taken from or atleast a general area. Not to hard to lie about after that. The Upper Red lake strain of walleyes came from a specific lake if I remember right and they can tell if they are Red Lake walleyes or not by a simple test. Be careful and always stay within the limits of the body of water you are fishing on. Eat your fish from URL before you leave and catch more on LOW. No need to even transport them. Unless you don't expect to catch fish at spot number 2. grin

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
