anyone have any info on this area. i would like to try the whitefish & maybe the walleye perch fishing. have tried to research it but can't find much. wondering mainly if a guide is required or if it can be done solo. are there any paid road access points like minnesota or is it usually a walk out since i don't have a sled. should i leave the wheel house at home & rent a motel? any info would really help. thank you.

They are catching a lot of whitefish, walleye and perch are slow.I have not been out there yet this year, its just from talking with people in the area. As far as access points there are sveral,no charge for them that goes for green bay as well as sturgeon bay. There realy is not a plowed road, just paths where others have gone. travel is easy this year. There are a couple of guide services in the area but you realy would not need them, for whitefish especialy. As for the wheel house you can bring it,or there are places nearby to stay.If you need any thing else just ask or email me at [email protected] Hope this helps

I can offer some coordinates and other info for whitefish in which we pounded them this year if interested. Very easy to get too, simple set up, and a great time. I didn't fish for any eyes as the bite for them is early morning. robnande at gmail dot com

Going out with guide from Gillispie's show, Bret Alexander on Feb. 26th. Whitefish in the morning and walleyes at night. Taking our shacks and staying on the ice. Bret has a web site to contact him. It's our group of 6 first time, should be a good time.

Gator bait, I fished out of Dykesville yesterday. First time fishing the big lake for whitefish. had a ball, even though the bite was slow. I am eagerly looking forward to my next trip out there. We set up and fished 11-16 f.o.w., and some fish were had at each depth. This was only my second time specifically fishing for whitefish.

what strikes you as a standard set up for whitefish angling? what sorts of contours/structure are people looking for when they target whitefish?

We were on a reef in about 55 fow. I had my camera down to monitor the fish and they would simply be cruising on bottom to 5ft of bottom, back n forth. It was a pretty rough bottom, lots of zebra mussels, so you had to keep your bait moving. They love cruising the dropoffs.

As far as set ups, this is what we did. Used 6lb test line rigged with a barrel swivel about 18in high. Now tis one of the tricks, take a #14 treble hook and let it free float "above" the barrel swivel. Then on the 18in extension we used a gold or copper colored swedish pimple. Hammered or not it didn't matter with us. Tip both trebles with 2 waxies and keep it moving down there. I know that 95% of our fish came on the free floating treble hook. We pretty much came to the conclusion that the pimples were basically acting as attractants for us.

One other thing we came into trouble with for these fishes, was Line Color. We could see our baits at 55ft, it's clear, you obviously know that. If we didn't have line on that was invisible in the water to our eyes, we wouldn't catch fish. Was the most intriguing thing I learned when fishing for them. All those little things one doesn't think of till it's almost too late.

Hope this helps you out.

How is the ice conditions up around Sturgeon Bay? Are guys driving out yet or is it still all wheelers.

Is there any place in Sturgeon Bay that sells tied up spawn sacs? I'm headed up that way to try for a few browns through the ice and don't have any spawn in the freezer.

Thanks

hello every one !! the sturgeon bay area has been awesome for whitefish this year !! weekdays are the best theres less traffic on the ice and the bite has been fast the best time to fish is 730 am to about 10;00 am then it slows down and you have to work for them a camera is a plus you can see what they want some days they are picky waxes on a jig , minnow head on a jig, just the tail sometimes , some times your best bet is a jigging rapala as far as a guide you dont need one but everone seems to be tight liped as far as me if you want to come up and have a great time catching whiteys if i am on the ice i am willing to teach anyone

so drop me a line and i give you my email adress and maybe we can hook up !! i fish out of my portable and i go out with my 4 wheeler but if you have a 4x4 you can drive out the ice is plenty thick the are i have been fishing there has been a couple surburbans parked out there so how much more ice do you need? so drop me a line and lets go whitefishing !!
