I checked at Gander today and all they have left are the Recon dlx and the Trekker(?). Recon looks sweet, but I think that the Commando would be nicer.

Adam

The Frabill Gander Mountain exclusive edition Trekker DLX is a nice unit...remove 1 seat...and it is the same weight, and same basic dimensions (LxWxH) to store/pull, as is the Frabill Commando..(Same sled)..but twice as wide in the forward fishing area.

Given the choice again today between the Frabill Commando or the Frabill Trekker DLX... I would likely go with the GM exclusive Frabill Trekker DLX instead. Just for the extra width to fish the DLX as a 1-man shack.

That's the way I went (DLX) and couldn't be happier...the extra room without alot of weight is great.

the commando is worth the extra $ over the recon, i got my commando from gander and they offered $50 off, i ended using the money saved and got a travel cover for it. you can easily fish all day without a sore back... or butt for that matter!

Eh..heads up..they are $75 off now guys/gals.

Not too many left to be had..so don't wait too long. wink

and i thought i got a good deal with $50 off! wow, i might have to go and pick up another one!! i finally got a chance to use the cammando at night, i will say, i wasted my money on those clam corp. led lights! i'll definatley be looking for something brighter! i installed a brunton solar charger on my seat frame to keep my batteries fully charged, it worked out pretty slick. will be adding the same utv organizer real soon. also fabbing up a custom bracket for the sat. radio and installing a 12v. power plug. i'm also in the drawing stages of and under seat cabinet that would have roller bearing pull out drawers, for tackle or gear.

That's a good rig Dairyman. Great to chat with you and discuss the modifications and tricks to get the most from it. Any questions or concerns, drop me a call.

If I would have had more time I would have liked to show you my Commando with that new R2-Tech skin too. That really completes the Commando as the best 1 man rig on to go. smile

Keep in touch.

allright....i got the parts...probem is now...on the left side..when you sitting in the seat fishing...there is an indent on the sled...i dont know what it is for but it gets in the way of mounting the rear seat support...i would have to move the front seat support up an inch in order for the rear seat support to clear the indent...make sense? ed...did you have to do this? or can i just bolt the rear seat support on an uneven surface?

That indent is the rear support pole deal for the Trekker DLX as they use the same tub.

I set the rear support right up against it and mounted mine. If you want to move it farther back, behind that hump, you will then need to also move the front back a bit too...can be done. Depends on how far back you want it.

I was happy with in front of it and I put a couple short pieces of Hi-Fax left over from the Hi-Fax installation as I needed to trim them and used them on the seat clamp to shim up the gap to keep it tight...a fussy thing to do...but I had it handy and you may not need that...but I had a couple pieces of the Hi-Fax handy and it worked perfect for that.

any ideas for dropping the seat height---I was in mine last nite and the extra height just killed my back

Well if you do the drop back on the seat mount it may solve it right there as we discussed? If not, and you really want to lower it, one could chop a few inches off the legs and re-weld the support feet back on again.

If a guy is chopping the legs, one could very easily make the height adjustable too with a insert or square sleeve, so you can bolt it at whatever height you liked.

just finished moving the seat back...well worth the 40 bucks for the extra seat assembly....it will be nice having the extra room when fishing with longer rods as well as being able to put the heater and vex infront of the seat for quick storage...it is also nice to put your feet up on the edge of the sled...i have short legs and this solves the problem of the high seat.

thanks ed!

No problem your very welcome, glad it worked out well for you. The "first use storage" in front will just get more handy as time rolls on too.

Enjoy the modification..now go catch some fish.

you'd want your hip about the same level as your need or a little bit lower...............they make these sled chairs for REAL tall people like 6'4". COmfly seats prevents your hips from rotating.........

I have been reading the posts on modifieng the Frabill Comando. I liked the idea of moving my seat back also. What I did was order 2 more of the metal corner braces that the rods connect to. I then removed the front seat brace an installed the new corner braces 12 inches behind the rear seat brace then the former front brace is now the rear seat bracket. I hope this makes sense to you but it sure worked out good for me. I think the total price for the braces and shipping was 16.75.

Bullheaded

    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
