Lakemaster Insight Chips

TopwaterTom21

Question

I am in the market for a new GPS. I am between a Garmin 60csx and a Oregon 400t. Which Garmin's accept the Lakemaster Insight Chips and where can you buy them? The 3-D mapping looks ridiculous and I wish that the 60csx could handle them but I don't believe they're compatible. Has anyone had any experience with the 400t? The reviews aren't as good as the 60csx, but if they can use the insight chip, that's a big reason for me to get it. Thanks for all of your help!

Garmin has had the G-2 Vision with Mariners eye 3-D and Fish eye sonar integrated 3-D out for some time now in there marine line, in Inland and in Coastal versions.

But your would be wise to see what coverage is available now in the upper Midwest. It was previously limited to only a few key waters like Lake of the Woods and a few others.

For the price and value to an inland lakes mapping user, you may wish to compare the Oregon 300 series and consider applying the savings to your specifically desired regional mapping..just a thought.

I talked to Garmin and the they told me the lakemaster is capable of mariner eye and fish eye view but is limited. 34, give or take 2 0r 3, lakes I believe I counted fro their list. The lakes on the list consist of major bodies like Mil lacs, Vermillion,Little Vermillion, Pokegama, Kabetogama, Burntside, Crane, Cass, Pelican, Cut foot Sioux, Peppin, Gull, Lake Bemidji, Bigstone, Traverse, Winnebagosh and more. Most located from Milaca going north.

Now, I may have misunderstood that I wouldn't be surprised(Man I hope I'm not mixing my dream state with reality again) sick. If so I waisted a lot of time setting up way points on google earth. I have not tried these lakes out as of yet as these lakes are some distance from me. I should mention I did this research for my Garmin GPS/Map sonar on my boat and my boat was out of commission last year.

From some people I have talked to the G2 vision is awesome for Lake of the Woods Rainy Lake and Superior.

How important is the internal memory on the Oregon 300 instead of the 200? Do you save all your waypoints on the internal memory if you buy maps on sd cards? Or how does having little internal memory restrict you?

I have the Oregon 200 because I got a real good deal on it. If you go the 200 route, buy all your maps on DVD and then transfer all that you need on to a 4gig SD card. That should hold the Lakemaster, a City Navigator, and some TOPO maps of Minnesota on it. Just enable the maps you want when you need them without switching the card.

No your correct, I should have been more clear...sorry.

The Mariners Eye and Fish Eye Views are radar assisted and/or sonar driven software platforms, so the hand held units will not use those features...but the G2 Vision cards work in the new Garmin marine and handheld units alike.

The G2 Vision is amazing stuff, we use it on our Garmin 5212 on the water.

Whew! Thanks Ed I thought maybe I would have to visit the Doctor again for that special medication. grin

That 5212 sure looks like an awesome unit. I'm only running the 530s but looking at the 720s not that I need the capability to hook up radar or auto pilot on my little fish and ski with out a network system grin.
