Attic insulation

Recommended Posts

I want to blow insulation in the attic of my garage, then also add some to the rest of the house while I am at it. Currently there is none in the garage attic, and there is cellulose insulation in the house attic. Should I put cellulose is above the garage, and just a few more inches to the attic of the house, or should I use fiberglass? Will it matter if I use fiberglass ontop of the cellulose? Is there a better one to use in the garage attic?

How many inches should I put in the garage? How many inches should be in the attic of the house?

I will be renting a blower and doing it myself.

I would just go with the cellulose as long as you already have it in the house. I have 12" fiberglass roll insulation covered with about 4" of fiberglass blow-in insulation in the house and about 13" of fiberglass blow-in in my shop. I started with 15-16" of blow-in in my shop when it was built in 1993, and I added some over the top once already, and it is due for some more again now, so it settles quite a bit over time. I think the cellulose has a higher R factor than fiberlass. You can blow fiberglass over cellulose, but not the other way around, because cellulose is heavier than fiberglass.

fyi make sure and put vapor barrier in garage attic before you blow insulation in. I wish I had done this

The sheet rock is already on, and I dont believe there was a vapor barrier on it. Is there a way to lay it in between the joices and have it be efficient? Or is it to late that the sheet rock is on there? What will it harm if I dont install the vapor barrier?
