Light Portable that Carries the essentials

Hello ALL,

I am looking if anyone has any advice on a very portalble flip over tent that will allow someone 6'1" to stand up in, fit in the back of my suburu forrester and does not weigh a lot, and fish two men. So far I have not been able to find anything that meets those standards. All seem to be just too short and too heavy. I like to be mobile and there are some very light tents out that will fit in a cheap sled, but I like the idea of not having to set spikes in the ice to hold them in place.

So basically, after looking at all the options, I have been thinking of buying a sled and making it into a pull over with just the basics. Anyone try this, or is there any reason it wont work?

Thanks,

Simple1

Dont know why it wouldnt work but what you will have into it you could buy one. The quickflip would fit your needs wouldnt it. they are alittle heavy but with the runner kits out there you would be ok.Have you looked into the fishtrap line or frabill? You will probably have to give some where. Get a small trailer??>

I know the green eskimo quickflip 3 would have the height for ya.

Well, I looked at the materials I would need to make an ok tent and with my skills.... well lets just say that I have decided to get a little trailer or hitch rack for my vehicle. Then I can just get the portable I want without limitations for transporting.

Thanks for your suggestions. Another nice day on the ice tomorrow for sure.

Fish trap Kodiak description from another site:

If you like to stretch or aren't made for a small one man shack, the Kodiak fits it's name perfectly. You can stand up or stretch when you need to. This probably won't fit in the trunk of your car, but you can put this in the bed of your truck and pull it out to your favorite spot. If you like to stand up and change depths or don't like hitting the top of the shack when you set the hook, the Kodiak is your shack.

Dad has the other one man FT model and likes it because of its light weight and that is fits in the back of his Jeep. But he's only 5'10.

I looked at getting a trailer and hitch rack for my vehicle, Ford Edge, ~has to be around same size as your Forester, but decided to just purchase a Hub / Pop-up and sled. It was suggested above also - have you looked at a Pop-up? I am 6'1 and no problems standing in my Clam Command Post.

Yeah,

I am going to get a pop up. I already have the Clam chair, wich is great and carries like a backpack. I looked and looked and pop up and a sled appears to be the way to go.

And on I side note, I was hole hopping today when a lady stopped by and asked me if I knew why there auger wont work. Before I even looked over I was thinking about issues a gas auger would have, when I looked over and saw her female friend using a hand auger with no sucess. Looking at it, I saw that the blades were rusty and there was no way that was going to go through the ice.

Since I was leaving to another spot I said they could have my fishing hole that was producing small crappie and blugills, and I drilled them another hole. They were happy and said great, and i asked if they had any wax worms. They said no, but after the hole is drilled they would go to the store for bait. Well, I saved them some time and gave them an extra can I had of waxies so they could fish without the added trip.

I just thought it was funny that 2 older women were going to try ice fishing for the first time, had a rusty auger and no bait. Anyway, it was nice to help someone out, as I have been helped by others as well, stuck vehicles, good tips, and other ways we have been able to help others out.

Good luck, and good fishing,

Thanks all,

Not sure if you were looking to fold down the back seat in your Subaru, i didn't want to in mine, so found the Small Wild Outdoors sled, 22x44 to fit sideways. Jet Sled also has one and even a wide, like 32x42

Nice to hear the "MN Nice" and the story!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
