Just a couple of days away from the Trout opener up here in Ely, and even the local folks are getting excited about the possibilities. (Maybe it's early stage cabin fever.)

Lake conditions are excellent this year with up to nineteen inches of good ice on lakes such as Burntside and Snowbank for the Lake Trout fishermen and Miners, High, Dry and Tofte For rainbows, splake and browns.

A light cover of snow, less than six inches universally, makes for easy travel and portability.

how are the snowmobile trails? i like to do a trip on the sleds each year and havent checked into the conditions yet.

There's only a foot of snowfall in the woods, so the trails are in very hit-or-miss condition unless you're out on the lakes.

People are driving on all the area lakes now. That being said, take care out there! I'd rather read about your successes on HSO than read your name in the obituaries!

Square Lake is NOT a designated trout lake, so no you do not need a trout stamp to fish it, you only need one if you keep any trout.

But unlike other lakes that are NOT designated trout lakes, you are NOT allowed to use live minnows on square. However, are you allowed to use 2 lines in the winter?

minnows are ok on square lake b/c it is not a designated trout lake. 2 lines are ok on square lake. possession limit is two trout.
