the old coleman focus 5 heater

fishinbros

Question

The mantle on mine has finally disintigrated and I see that this part is no longer available. I would really like to get this heater going again. Any ideas of what they used for material or what would work? I have tried stainless steel screen from strainers, but they fall apart rather quickly.

I think you may be out of luck on that one. I had the same thing happen to my old Focus 5 a couple of years ago and was sad to see it go. They were great heaters.

The screen was definately stainless steel, but is was most likely an alloy specifically selected for high temperature use. It would be very difficult to find that material, especially in a small piece.

Well not much help, but I did see him this morning and he said he used a piece of stainless steel mesh that he formed over the burner head and clamped on with a hose clamp. The bad part is he don't know where to get the material as he got the mesh from another party who had it laying around his garage. He said it was a fairly fine mesh and that it work great.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I am semi-serious about repairing this heater. I don't want to put a whole lot of money into this. Hydro, that McMaster Carr catalog - wow, they have a lot of stuff. Any idea which screen to use?

I guess I would start with the bolting grade in about 20 mesh? You need to find something similar to the original screen mesh. It will be the least expensive as well. Good luck resurrecting the heater. Let us know how it goes.
