I have two mr heater sunflowers and both of them have the same problems. I have replaced thermocouples and that has not helped. It lights fine, but after it is lit there are flames coming out of the top, i would still use it but am worried about the canvas. Does anyone have any ideas? I am heading up to LOTW Thursday and hope i can fix it.

thanks

Have you checked the fresh air tube for blockage? We used to see how far we could get the flame to go up when we blocked the two holes, and then quickly released. If there is something stuck in that tube, it will react the same way. Just a thought.

Try hooking up a 1 pounder and see if that burns good, if so it's your tank. If not it maybe some thing blocking the air tube or the gas orifice is clogged like others have said. You can use a welding tip cleaning set with one of the smallest tips to clean the gas orifice out. Good luck with heater and fishing! wink

Sounds like you need to adjust your air mixture or check for air blockage like the others have said. Just to correct an earier statement on this post, if you have sloshing in your tank it's just the liquid gas that's still in the tank. That's kind of a way to tell how much gas you have left if your getting low. LPG stands for liquid propane gas. Those 20# tanks aren't filled up with 16# of vapor, it's liquid. He was right about the overfill protection valve they do go bad. But if your burner lights it's probably not an over-filled tank. Liquid needs to vaporize to burn so you proably wouldn't get a flame till about 3-4ft away. I know I used to work for a gas company when we'd blow down forklift tanks (they have a liquid draw) you could hold a lighter out right in front of the valve and start moving it away and the gas wouldn't light till about 4ft away when it vaporized and had the right oxygen mix.

I took everything apart and cleaned it with WD 40, then adjusted the airflow nut a third of the way up. I don't know which thing worked the most, but the flames have dissapeared! Thank you all for the tips. Now my only problem is finding the fish this weekend.
