Fish allergies?

Recommended Posts

I am not sure this is the best place to post this. We fried up some walleye that I found in the bottom of the freezer tonight. Everything was good until a little while after we ate my 9 year old son had an allergic reaction. His eyes swelled up so bad the his right eye was swollen shut. He also had some breathing issues. This happened a while ago when the flu was going around and we weren't sure why it had happened. We did manage to give him some benadryl quicker this time which helped the breathing right away.

The only thing that was common between the episodes was eating fish. He has never reacted to fish in the past in fact he loves fish. We used the same batter and oil that we normally use for cooking. We will have to get some tests run to verify the alergy. I hope it is not the fish! My wife wont even let him go fishing until we find out. I just thought it was weird as he has eaten fish hundreds of times. Has anyone heard of allergies starting all of a sudden?

My cousin was 21 and all of a sudden became allergic to shrimp. His whole face swells up like a balloon. It's not impossible. I think eating and catching are two different things though. He should still be fine fishing.

That's actually not that uncommon. I became allergic to deer (the fur) when I was around 8 or 9 years old. Before that, I always hung out with the guys and helped and had no reactions. It does happen.

The tests will verify it.

I had the same thing happen when I was somewhere around 12 years old. I had eaten fish my whole life and suddenly developed a fairly severe allergy. Even a dime sized piece of fish was a problem.

I avoided fish entirely for 6 or 7 years and then started trying small bites every time I had the chance. At first I could feel it causing my throat to swell up, but after a few years it quit. Knock on wood, I'm now up to eating multiple whole fillets and even shrimp and crab without a problem. I'm still a little bit nervous eating it, but at least I don't have to be worried if something were to get fried in the same oil as fish.

I develoveped a fish allergy in my mid 20's. Started with shell fish, and has turned into an all fish problem. I can not even fillet or clean real oily fish like trout and salmon.

I have been told there is no real way to verify a freash water fish allergy. Shell fish and saltwater "sea food" they can test for, but for some reason freash water fish are hard to test.

Sad thing is, I love to eat fish. I used to eat it weekly. Lots of it. Shellfish, sea food, pickled hearing and pike, loved it all. Now nothing. Just cant do it at all. frown

Salt water seafood allergies are generally caused by the iodine present in salt water and therefore the life that lives in it. I would guess fresh water allergies would be protein or fat related.
