Chip and Garmin Nuvi

I'm considering buying the wife a Garmin Nuvi 855 for driving/directions but I'm wondering if I could get a Lakemaster chip and use if on the ice and make it a dual purpose GPS. Has anyone used a Lakemaster chip with a Garmin Nuvi unit? Any thoughts pros/cons or comments are appreciated.

Thanks

There is a guy here called deadeye that has a Garmin nuvi 500 that he has used it with. The nuvi 500 or 550 are geared more towards using it as a handheld for offroad use, like being waterproof, having a longer battery life, and programming with trail/waypoint recording and retracing. I don't know about the 855, but I was pretty close to getting a 500 and loading LM onto it, but am going to hobble along with my b/w etrex legend for another year.

you can use a lakemaster chip in any of the garmins with a SD slot. It can NOT be any lakemaster chip. It has to be a GARMIN lakemaster chip. The 500 can be used for hiking boating biking and driving, it has different modes in it that you can switch. hiking and boating and biking take you "as the crow flies" driving goes by road. The 500 is also waterproof and has an 8hr battery. Some of the garmins have anSD slot for the lakemaster chip, the 500 has a micro SD card slot in the battery box. The micro SD card is a little harder to find- garmin web site has them. NOT the big name stores.

I just put a LM chip in my205W last week and used it on the ice once. Did a pretty good job. I put it in a ziplock bag and the touchscreen still worked fine. Battery life is short so you'll want to shut it of while fishing. I'm sure their not as good a dedicated unit but it will get me by until I can spend more $$

Pretty much sums it up. LEIextras has the chips for sale on their site.

Garmin has their own lake software as well. It doesn't have the HD stuff like lakemaster does but you have computer waypoint managment and a program thats pretty sweet with it. Its nice because its a full map on the screen of your computer, fun to tinker with when you cant get on the lake. You just load the maps onto the unit with a mini usb cable.

Thanks for the feedback. I decided to order the Garmin Nuvi550 and Lakemaster chip. The Lakemaster chip from Lakemaster arrived already. The wife wanted a Garmin for car travel and I wanted a device to go with the Lakemaster chip so hopefully we both win. Thanks again.

is there a way one can type in gps coordinates into the nuvi and then find a spot? i have a ton of paper coordinates from previous ice fishing "adventures", and have the coordinates on paper.. if i was to invest into a nuvi, i would hope to be able to type in the gps coordinates and it would pinpoint the spot for me?

Yes you can, this applies to the NUVI 500 but it might work on others.

Click on the WHERE TO GO?, then click on COORDINATES, pick your format, enter your data and click done, you should be set.

Should be no reason why you couldn't also input your coordinates into a program like EasyGPS or GPSTrackmaker and then upload them to the GPS device too.

i have all my lake coordinates on my wifes garmin. i use the fish icon for them. its funny when we drive past a lake that i fish and we see all these fish icons......when on the ice, be sure to switch it over from vehicle to pedestrian.....if your walking that is...will be alot easier.

On the Nuvi, can you zoom in well enough to get at a pretty accurate location? Specifically for ice fishing if you are trying to get at an exact spot? I have a Nuvi and I'm waiting for the chip to arrive (tomorrow). Anxious to try it out this weekend.

Yes, You can zoom right in, I haven't been on the ice with mine yet just played with it at home, I am using a Nuvi 205W with the Lakemaster Rainy/LOW chip in it. It seems just as detailed as my laptop with the gps attatched and the Lakemaster software.

I have the same set up, and like it very much. I think you'll be pleased.

Geno,

Your Garmin is compatible, I have never used a 750 but I would suggest a couple items to check on.

First make sure you have the latest updates from Garmin for your Nuvi 750, it's very easy to do just sign up for a free account at Garmins site.

Second, you will have to tell the Nuvi to use the data on the chip, in Tools and Settings ( I believe ???? ) there should be something about Maps or Map Data, when the Nuvi sees the Lakemaster Chip you will see it as a option in this area, make sure you have a green checkmark in the Lakemaster data and that should be it.

This is how it is done with the Nuvi 500 and it seems like most of the interfaces are pretty close to the same.

HMMM, I have to ask, is this a Garmin Lakemaster Card? Lakemaster makes the card specific to Garmin so you can't use one from Lowrance.

If it is a Garmin card then I would suggest calling Lakemaster, they can help you better than I can.

I have the Nuvi 750 but I cant get the LM chip to read?

Am i doing something wrong or is this model not capable

of doing this?

On my 205w the map loaded but did not appear to do so. you have to go into the tools-settings-map info and select the lakemaster on the menu otherwise the factory map will override it.When using it on the road select the factory nap if you want points of interest etc. If you have done this allready then you will need to contact the mfg.Just checked and the 750 is listed for micro SD chips on LM's HSOforum.

Just last week I bought a Nuvi 205w and I have the Garmin Lakemaster chip in it. The main negative I would say about it is the zoom limit. I'm assuming it's the device that is limiting it, not the chip, but I can only zoom into 80' per centimeter. It will definitely work to get you very close to the spot you want, but if you are trying to hit a specific depth on a steeper drop, you can't zoom in enough on the steeps to get enough definition between the depths.

Anyone know if other Nuvi's allow for better zoom levels?

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
