How to get a 'yote within 30 yds?

Recommended Posts

I posted in the wrong forum the other day on this subject. Maybe you experts can fill me a little better.

I want to shoot a coyote with the bow. What are some tactics I can employ to get one of them critters in close? Bait, calling, etc? I put up a trail cam on a deer carcass earlier in the fall and had a few coming in between 12-3am. I probably wouldn't be able to manage a light solo so I'd have to rely on moonlight and snow for visual. Suggestions?

A couple things I can think of you might need:

a blind large enough for 2.

Electronic caller (coyote distress, howls, mouse squeeker)

string/squirrel tail

light/red lense (not sure if it's legal with a bow. RBuker might know this one)

A buddy willing to tag along and work the light for you.

The above would be my first approach if I were to attempt to take a 'yote with a bow.

No need for a blind if you are going with a light. Doubt you will see your pins though.

Best bet is bowhunt on a narrow creek bottom and hope one strolls by while hunting deer. Thats how I have shot mine.

Calling in a faily open woods would be my best bet. Use an e-caller and be ready. The Verminators did a Bowmania video, I haven't watched it though. Its tough enough to get one to respond let alone get them to 30-yds. I would start off knowing that its going to be tough and hunt in areas where you can see yet they will have a tough time seeing you. Keep the wind in your face and have a rifle for back up. Good Luck

I'll have to pick up an e-caller for sure. Would a carcass or some kind or bait work well without calling? (I don't know how much these callers are but I doubt they're very cheap.)

One final thing is time of day. Would I be better off going out in the evening (5-6pm) or at before first light in the am?
