Why is it steelhead run in the fall when they spawn in the winter? It is a "false" run so what brings them in aside from gorging themselves on the eggs of lake run browns?

They spawn in the spring, not winter. I'm pretty sure they are coming in in the fall to feed on the easy meals and to also overwinter in the river to take advantage of the food to get fat for the spawn and also conserve energy instead of roaming the big lake all winter. I think, anyway......

Yep meant to say they spawn in the spring. Was type. It is a "false run." I am told Boise Brule is closed now. Do not all big lake tribs stay open all winter? I think Len mentioned his bud Ted will be fishin' for them all winter, I obviously assume assume legally. Lake Michigan.

Would like to know more about the regs. Maybe I need to go hit up some of these bad boys if they are going to be around for a while?

The seasons vary by stream. The Bois Brule has been closed since November 15th, but the North Shore streams are open year round. Many of the Lake Michigan tributaries are open year round as well. Lake Michigan and Lake Superior run fish of all species taste and behave differently (or so I am told, I have only fished and eaten fish from Superior tributaries).
