Installing windows

For conversation sake "where you live in Duluth" How does that make a difference in buying windows?

As for your replacement windows there are several places in town that will bid you the price of the windows including installation. Your problem lies in how much you want to spend on windows as there are a lot of different types and styles. Get at least three windows bids ( you will be surprised at the price range) and ask to see where they have installed their windows so you can look at them. Also find out if they will return all trim or replace trim inside and out to your specs And Yes I have done replacement windows on several properties in the Duluth area.

Kate, good to have you here.

You can go two routes.

Take the measurements between the jambs, give that to a home center, pick out a quality line of window and then find a contractor to install them. Or find a contractor(s), have them measure the windows and use a window they recommend.

I recommend the later. Reason why is, a contractor is going to get the correct size window, thus no surprises when it comes to install. A contractor is going to have a relationship with an area manufacturer, know their product, which in return gives your the best install and when a contractor is well versed with a manufactures product the familiarity brings it over the top.

I've said just recently suggested Walsh Window in Duluth. I put them at the top of the list. I've installed a ton of their windows and can tell you the homeowners were very pleased with the product. Ask them for a reference for an installer. What your looking for is a contractor that'll get job done with the least amount of disturbance to your existing trim but at the same time do a complete job.

Most of them are not too bad...but they are all very old and the glass is warping, and they are painted shut. Some of them are slightly rotting, but mostly not. I live in Gary New Duluth...but why does it matter where I live? (because of travel time?)

I'm guessing he wants to know where, in case you live in a historic distric, becasue those districts usually have restrictions of the type/stlye of the window to keep the historic look.

Id find a contractor thru reccomendations and listen to what they have to say about window brands. I like anderson & marvin for wood clad windows, and thermo-tech for vinyl windows. (all made in minnesota) they all make replacement versions also.

Kate,

Go over to Walsh and ask Gary or Shawn and they will be able to help you out. I think they might even do some install but don't quote me on that. They are located in West Duluth. down by the old Porky's building.
