Another Firearms Question

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

So much good info from my other post, thought I'd ask this one too. I've been reading the laws on this, but haven't found the answer yet.

Let's say you have a relative who resides in another state. They pass away and "will" a firearm to you. What needs to take place? Does that firearm need to be licensed, registered etc. in Minnesota? What does the person who inherits that firearm have to do to possess it legally in Minnesota?

Is it different for say a .45 vs. a shotgun?

Thanks!!

I do not think you have to do anything at all. I have an old rifle that my grandfather gave me; did not do anything.

I do not think it matters with a handgun either; my OPINION is that you are liable to the law if you personally are not legally able to have a weapon in your possession.

Two issues - how are you going to get it here and are you prohibited from possessing the firearm. Shipping it from a distance would require some special handling with the shipping company. If you aren't prohibited from possessing the firearm then you have no other responsibilities under the law of Minnesota.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

The firearms would not be shipped. We'd probably fly out and rent a truck so we can haul a bunch of other stuff back here at the same time...so we'd be transporting them that way.

My wife and are not prohibited in any way from possessing a firearm, so it sounds pretty straight-forward.

Thanks again!!
