poor group of hunter this weekend..

Recommended Posts

Really bad etiquette this weekend by a group of 2 guys and a gal while duck hunting for the evening shoot.. we got out there around 3pm and set up by 3:20.. they go out at around 4:00 and were louder then heck getting set up and they were about 150 yards away from us on a point just behind and across from us. while they were setting up, a nice group of say 10 mallards come in on us and then as soon as their about to lock their wings, BANG one person drops something metal against thier boat and we say bye bye to the ducks.. Then at around 4:30-6 a lot of nice groups of ducks coming in on us decoying up and then theyd start calling them, when they flying in on us about to land! (note: too far to shoot at) and then they would fly away and we'd say good-bye to them again and again and again... it happend maybe 6 times! its like, why would you start calling ducks when the ducks see someone elses deeks and they start to make their descent...?! on top of that, they didnt even go land in there deeks, neither of us benifited from it! I cant believe that 3 hunter of thier age would do such a thing... VERY RUDE! we only got one BIG mallard out of the whole weekend, wouldve had close to our limit but those people were really rude and noisier the He double hockey stix...

on the bright side, just think there will be a few more birds around next year because you (and they) didn't get limits

ahhh they will all be in SD because of this type of behavior... ha if you move to a town where everyone speaks spanish and the whole town yells when you come into view then get the $$$$ scared out of you. would you stay in this town? NO. i like to hunt nights, have never seen another duck hunter out after 2pm =)

Ah yes, the joys of hunting public. I hunt only public lands for waterfowl and some of these things have to be expected (not getting peppered however). I can see where you are frustrated but thats hunting. Yesterday we had a guy come set 200 yds down from my set up and this is a huge lake. He set up after me and while we shot more, we were competing all day long for the same ducks. He called at our ducks and we called at his. None of this was done out of disrespect. It was done with the intent to kill ducks that I drove way out to hunt. If they were trying to flare ducks by making loud noises blame PETA. Yea, 150 yds is very close. All that is done in poor taste but calling and hunting the same ducks??? Thats part of the game. If they were cupped and completely sold they would have come in and you would have pounded em. Im guessing you dont normally have much competition where you hunt so it seems redonkulous but it happens everywhere and is common practice. Spend extra time concealing your boat and faces and you'll get em next time.

?????

limit shimit. All everyone ever talks about is filling their limit.

if one measures the success of a hunting or fishing trip by how many ducks got shot or how many walleye are in the live well than one is missing the big picture.

Go out, have fun, and don't worry about filling your limit. It sucks when somebody posts up too close, but it's a fact of life. You can't do anything about it and it shouldn't ruin your day.

yeah i understand the limit thing, i have the greatest of time hunting, but it would be nice to get a limit,..... thats all i was trying to say.

Mudslinger, yeah the lake we were on was really big as well, but my problem with them was, when ducks were going towards their decoys, we didnt call at them but they contiued to call at the ducks that were coming towards us and they knew that we were set up there..

Jordyn, I hear ya. I get frustrated with others' poor choices too. The only way i've found to beat em is to hunt better and smarter than them.

You could confront them in a problem solving sort of way but that could go any number of ways and may not be worth the trouble.

It dumbfounds me how many people put up with hunting like that on public water. I guess I'm spoiled to have a 40 acre slough to myself that brings in a decent number of birds...I found the slough, asked permission, and I kiss the landowners butt to keep sole access. It's amazing to actually call ducks that you are not worried about getting skybusted on. There are hundreds of sloughs like that around....get a 12' aliuminum for a few hundred bucks, keep it at the pond for the season if the landowner lets you, drag it in, build a cart for it...whatever it takes to get away from the crowds...it's sooo worth it!

I had a bad one last week as well.

My nephew and I got out nice and early to set up. We have flocks working , and 10 minutes after shooting hours open here comes a boat right at me. I stand up and flash my lights. I look over and see a spread that had been left overnight very close to us. I know it as out all night because there were 2 inches of snow on them. I yell to the guy "sorry, I didn't see your spread". He then tells me I'm hunting private land. I tell him that I'm hunting from a boat in the water, and not on private land. He then yells that it is bullsh** that I set up near his spread, to which i responded that it is illegal to leave decoys out overnight. He ignores me, and sits down in front of his spread. He was also wearing a blaze orange hat and blue gloves.

I left, frustrated.

So the answer is that only the a-holes will be left out there? I'm not one to push a river, but if I don't attempt to affect change in a positive way, e.g. reporting the jerk-baits who give real sportsman a bad name, then I have no right to whine either.

Complaining for complaining sake doesn't change a darn thing. Box did the right thing to follow-up on the chap who blocked his access to a PUBLIC lake and now the perp is going to get what he earned--a fine and some valuable education on how to join the human race!
