NW Ontario Lake Trout?

Google Gateway North Outfitters out of Emo. I have fished there multiple times each of the last 3 winters and we do excellent every trip. Both Pipestone and Dogfly Lake are awesome fisheries, with countless other lakes around them to explore. Beautiful lakes with little to no competition from other fisherman. We've gone 4 days without seeing another person up there. Superbee is the man to talk to, he sponsors the Canada forum, I believe. He would answer all of your questions and get you started. He knows what he is talking about, too. Good Luck!

I heard that Crow might have a little better numbers, but from what I have heard and seen in pictures, the trout are typically quite a bit smaller. Its hard for me to imagine it could put out better numbers than what Pipestone or Dogfly typically does for us, but I have never fished it so I can't be certain. I know Whitefish Bay has some monsters, but I have never fished it so can't tell you much about it. It may be worth a look. I have only fished Manitou once, for about 1/2 hour, while I was staying on Dogfly. Didn't catch anything but lost a few and had some chasers. LOTS of good looking water out there. I don't think you would be disappointed with either place. Have you ever been up there fishing for them? If not, you are in for a treat! I'm already counting down the days until January 6th! Speaking of which, I would try to book a trip in January or early February if possible. The fishing (for us at least) has been much better the earlier you go. Just be prepared to fish in -20 to -35 weather. We leave the portables at home as it seems like moving constantly produces better for us. If you decide on Pipestone or Dogfly and have any questions, just let me know and I'd be happy to help.

Mike,

Both are nice cabins. If I had to pick the one that seemed the cleanest/newest, I would probably have to go with the Pipestone Outpost, although there certainly is nothing wrong with Dogfly. Pipestone also happens to be my favorite lake, although that probably has more to do with all the memories I have had on it over the years than the fishing. Then again, my biggest trout did come from Dogfly, which was 36" and somewhere between 15 and 20 pounds (and is still swimming). Keep in mind these are outpost cabins, which means a generator for electricity, wood stoves for heat, and outhouses when nature calls. If your wife doesn't want to "rough it" so much, Gateway North also has two or three very nice cabins at their base on Off Lake. Its about a 20-30 minute run to get to some great trout water from there, but with the added bonus of monster (seriously huge) crappies almost right out your front door, and indoor facilities. I'm sure Superbee would be happy to answer any questions, although he may be running some remote deer hunts by now so I'm not sure if he has access to internet. If you have any other questions shoot me your email and I'd be happy to answer them. If you decide to go up there I can get you started with some great lakes/areas to try. If I sound biased, its because I am, these winter trout trips are my favorite of the year, hands down.

LazyMike,

Both the cabins on Dogfly and Pipestone are set up very nice and well equipped. You can view the cabins on our HSOforum and check them out. Have had lots of women at both of them over the years and no complaints. If they look like it would be to much roughing it with the outhouse, then we have the cabins on Off Lake with running water available. The lake trout fishing from Off Lake is 6-12 miles depending on what lake you ride to and can fish crappies as well.

I have never fished Whitefish Bay, but have been hearing the numbers are down, but excellent size on the ones you do get. I think our numbers are very similar to Crow, maybe slightly less, but our average size is alot better. You can go to our fishing reports page and checkout the last few seasons and see how everyone has been doing and if you want to conatct any of the groups for references, let me know and I will get you the info.

If you have any other questions or concerns email me at [email protected]

NoWiser - see you in Jan for the 1st trip!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
