pondwater
I am looking to start making some jigs this winter and I have been looking around for some lead. Where does someone find this to purchase it? I have been reading a lot about it and looks like I should use soft lead for making small jigs (under 1/4 ounce). I know about tire weights but should I be using soft lead for the small jigs or will hard lead work? Does anyone know what lead sells for? hydro
You will have to use soft (pure) lead for small castings. If you try to use hard alloys like tire weights you will see a lot of short pours on your jigs. Very frustrating. You should be able to buy lead at a commercial plumbing supply house or online through McMaster Carr. The extra cost is worth it.
mrklean
you can get lead free, ask around dental places i always used the foils, not the cleanest lead but it worked great and it was free
ddsbyday
I would stick to the soft or even better pure lead for all castings. You get much better pours. You don't have to smoke you mold. Your sprues twist off easy without leaving a bump on the head. I get mine at an auction site for about 1.00/lb. There are sellers on this big E auction site that only deal in lead. (buy it now). pondwater
Thanks for the help, I will check them places out. Found some lead on HSO-Classifieds but looks like it is selling for 3 bucks a pound. Sounds a little on the high side.
backlash 1
Go down to your local recycling place. They have all kinds of lead there, the stuff from leaded glass windows is very soft and CHEAP.
jigginjim
Some soft lead can purchased from local Box sporting goods stores. Some recycle out fits have said they could not sell it back to public as its a hazardous material.
