mudslinger64
i am done, but i would bet the bears would be pounding baits getting ready for winter.
motley man
I'm deer hunting with bow and the bears are on the move !! Had my trail stepped on after I went to my stand and found scat, tracks, trails, etc. Haven't seen but 2 deer in that area. But things will change as they move to other feed. There is a ton of acorn's this year. My back yard looks like a marble field. They seem to be eating berries now, but they will go to corn and fatty food now. knowsnothing
I am but I have not had any action for a couple weeks. I do have a question for you seasoned bear hunters. The locals are saying it may be too cold for the bears to be moving, since it will be 23 this weekend. I dont believe this as it is just a short cold spell but was wondering what you have experienced in the past.
lichen fox
My brother rebaited one of his sites 3 days ago and it was hit hard for the next two days...he plans on hunting it tonite or tomorrow...This time of the year the bears usually get more active as they look for the last food available...clovers and grasses dry up, etc...the cooler weather as we're having now will not necessarilly be the determining factor in when a bear dens. I harvested the largest bear I've taken to date, (650#'s)on the last day of season a few years back...4 days prior we had a foot and a half of snow and about half our baits quit...mostly smaller bears...What I've found is that a bear will den up when the food supply is gone...if they still have ample food and aren't expending more energy than they're taking in and still putting on fat they'll stay active...we've often seen them on the prowl even into november if there's standing sunflowers or corn in the area for them to feed on...on the other hand I've seen them den as early as late september in big forest area when there is little or no natural food available...I wouldn't worry about cold...food is the issue now. bearslayer
We didn't have much action the 1st 3 weeks, but the last 7-10 days, baits getting pounded pretty much every night by multiple bears. Just can't convince them to come out during shooting hours.
Nathansdad
I've only taken one bear in Minnesota and it was durring mid October. One positive about taking a late season bear is the fur is in much better condition than in early September. Now is prime time if you are looking for a bear rug. The year I took my bear there was a very large bear hitting our bait but only at night. The interesting thing is durring the gun deer season he hit the bait several times while there was snow on the ground. I wish trail cameras would have been affordable then. Matt Breuer
You also need to remember that bears LOVE oats, and the oat fields just came into prime in the last 2 weeks. We're still running baits, and we're still getting hit every night. Mostly yearlings and mom's w/ cubs, but getting hit none-the-less. Scat around the baits are full of oats...
