Best camping trip of the year

Recommended Posts

No new posts in this area, so I thought I would at least post something new.

What was your favorite campout this year and what made it great?

Mine was a trip up to the north shore with my daughter and son-in-law. He had never camped before and we had a great time smile

Another was a trip up to Ely. Stayed at a camper cabin in a State Park. It was early in the year and weather was cold, so the cabin made it a lot more fun. Still had the outdoor feel however. Fishing was great!

Also went on a trip to Leech Lake. Caught lots of fish and had a great time with a friend and his adault son. I learned from them that I spend way to much time preparing for a trip. Besides eating the fish meals, we lived on cheese brats & PB&J sandwiches the whole time there.

Ours was our yearly 10 day family vacation to Kamp Dels. What made it so fun what how much fun the kids have there every year!!! Just good quality family time, something that we seem to lack in our busy everyday lives nowadays!!

My favorite hardly compares to the rest of our trips. In late June, my family took our new camper on a 10 day trip. We went to the Black Hills for a weekend and then spent the rest of the trip in Montana including 5 whole days in Glacier National Park. What an amazing place. We hiked in the mountains, including at Logan Pass, which opened up the last day we were there. We hiked the mountain tops in the snow.

We saw grizzly bears, black bears, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, mule deer, antelopes and we caught several types of trout including lakers from the glacial lakes.

My favorite camping trip: A group of my friends and thier families took a week long vacation to Leech Lake. A few of us brought campers and boats and another friend brought all of our 4-wheelers on a huge goose-neck flat bed trailer. We spent the week riding atv's in the area and fishing Leech Lake. The weather was great and the fishing was good. Everyone had a great time and want to do it again next year. It is unbelievable how fast 7 days can go by when your having so much fun.

Not sure if we have a favorite for the year, but the wife & I got out quite a bit. I think 9 times. Let me see if I can remember them all. Lanesboro, Hinckley, Janesville, Zumbro Falls, Redwood Falls, Red Wing, Upsala, New Ulm & Norwood. All good times. Probably done for the year now.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
