Smallest shack size for a bunk?

I just purchased an 8'x12' fish house that I'm going to use for this season that needs a lot of "tlc". Next summer I'm planning on tearing it apart and starting fresh. I want to build it with a bunk on one end higher up so that we can utilize the area under it while someone can be on the bunk. I was wondering if an 8'x12' house is going to be big enough to even put a bunk in it and still have room for a few people. Also how tall do you recomend I build the ceiling? Thanks for the help!

I have an 8x12 also with a set of single bunks across one end. I have had 3 people fishing in there, but thats about all I will do. A good idea to consider would be fold down bunks. Ones that flip up against the wall and come down supported by chains or something. Ive been in some small houses that had these and they worked out slick. Or another option would be portable cots. You have the whole house wide open in the day to fish, then just set up the beds when your ready to sleep.

i have an 8x12. i have a 30" wide bunk on the bottom, with a flip up lid for storage/batteries/inverter. for the upper bunk i put that on a hinge so it can be put up and out of the way. i then added another "leaf" to it on a hinge so the upper bunk folds down and then out and can sleep 2 people. they fold out and rest on a 2x2 screwed to the wall.

this seems to work pretty good for me.

I also have an 8x12 wheeled house i have a 30 inch bunk up by the celing and it is hinged at the back wall and the front is supported by chains so i can raise the front of it when not in use for head room. Below that is a 50 inch bench/bed that is hinged in the middle so during the day the back pulls up and you have a 25 inch bench and at night it pulls out and is a 50 inch bed i used a futon matress and it works great.

This is what I have. The bottom bunk is along the back wall. I've also got another 24" wide bunk on the side for those who can fit on it.

We can comfortably have 3 people jigging and have 3 rattle reels down. 4 will work, but it gets a little crowded.

If you don't care about fishing, my brother threw a party out there last winter and had 22 people in it at one time!

no problem plenty of room IF your door is not in the back of the house

I advise not going the entire width of the house. If you and your company are 6 feet tall or less; make bunk only 6 long and then either storage or put another hole. I am going to re-model mine from 8 wide bunk down to 6 and add a tall cabinet for storeage. good luck

I'm going to try to marry my camping style with my ice house, and use a hammock!! They are insanely comfortable, weight a bit over one pound, stuff into a bag smaller than a soccer ball and double as your chair. If it works, I'm going to post some pics, but at this point I can't see why it wont.

I like your idea crappiekid. The idea is to put a bunk in for my wife to go when she gets bored fishing. She can hop up there where it's nice and warm, throw in a dvd or read a book. That way I don't get in trouble for always being out fishing while she's sitting inside by herself. grin

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
