One for the frying pan

Scudly

I hiked in along a cornfield for about fifteen minutes until I came to a pasture section. At one deep wide bend I decided to cross so I could cast from my right to the upstream pool. This pool had a nice big downed oak tree hanging in the water. Looks like a good place to hide. Yet as I crossed, it was like quick sand, I kept sinking in about two feet each time I made a step. I kept thinking this does not look ideal for trout.

Fishing crawlers I would catch one 3-5” chub after another on a #8 hook. I kept a few and chopped their heads. I threw on a weighted bobber set four feet down with a tiny split and a #2 hook connected to a 3” chub tail right below the dorsal fin.

My first cast upstream into the pool, to the left of the downed oak tree. My bobber is motionless. Not expecting much, I decide to drink some iced tea. All of a sudden out of the corner of my eye I see a small wake coming towards my bobber. My bobber does some light twitches then goes under. I count to four and do a light hook set tug to my right side. Fish on! She was pulling pretty nice. I could tell nothing huge but all of a sudden I see a silver and long figure. My first glimpse I though I had a northern pike. Interesting. Yet as I reeled her in and hoisted into the weeds I realized I had a chunky rainbow trout. Nice!

This sized rainbow HAS to be a holdover. That or it grew really fast since the hatchery truck dropped her off at the beginning of the season.

I'm getting better with those chub tails too. I actually lip hooked this fish.

I have never fished Iowa. Anyone here fished IA? Do they have lots of holdover rainbows? I want to fish Waterloo Creek. Bee is too small on the MN side.

Is it even legal to catch creek chubs and then use them for bait? There are other rough fish that the regs. specifically say you can not use as bait, but not chubs. I was under the assumption it was illegal to catch and use fish as bait.

I also hope scudly was in WI.

WI is C&R only for stream trout from Sept 1 to Sept 31.

Wisconsin southern streams are NOT c/r only in sept.

Our season in wisconsin closes the last day of sep

That is the 30th of sep...Guess over across the

mississippi they added an extra day to sep.

Iowa is a put and take fishery, so if you're looking for holdover rainbows, yes, they are there and are routinely stocked. It's a 365/24/7 season and harvest is wide open.

So where was the fish in the picture caught and harvested if it was recent and WI and MN are in no-kill seasons and you've never fished Iowa?

I stand corrected. I would have sworn on a stack of Bibles that the "catch & keep" season ended on Spet 1 in WI, but I am obviously wrong. Thanks for the correct information.

Thanks Warren. With BugUgly, DA, and Big Hit also calling me a poacher I had to double check the WI regs again myself. Harvest through 12:59 pm September 30.

Get out and fish before the clock runs out!!! Believe it or not, I'm going fly fishing Sunday from 9:30 -12:30. Hopper dropper combo.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
