Lac Seul Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

Day 4: Fishing was tough today. Went up to the Grassys and Canoe. Had a hard time today finding fish in the AM. They said it was going to clear and be warm but we did not see the sun until 1PM. Froze my butt in the AM.Bailed after lunch and headed back SE to the river. Fished the current and did OK. Went in for early dinner and then headed out for some evening fishing in the Lost Lake area. Beautiful night and we ended up the day with 70 fish for the boat. Fish still very slow and not willing to attack much of anything. Many times we found ourselves draging around a fish for some time before even thinking to set the hook. Many nice size fish. Ran into one group that said they did well in 5 feet of water but most of ours came from 18 to 20 feet. Still running with bare hooks. Tomorrow will fish local.

Day 5 on Lost Lake: Fished local in the Lost Lake area today. Fishing was fabulous in the early AM between 7AM and 8:30AM. After that things shut down but we hammered them for about an hour. Fished several places before lunch but again had dismal fishing trying new spots without a bite.

The other boat of guys hit a hot spot where the wind started blowing into a sand/clay bay and caught a bunch in 6 to 16 feet of water. After lunch we all headed there and caught a few but was not near as good. Searched a few more places and tried a couple of places where we hit em early in the AM but did not do well at all. Tried the spots where we did well earlier today but did not get a bite. Followed the wind that was now from the S at only 9MPH and we struck gold at about 5PM. Pounded them for about an hour with 25 some fish at 18" and above. Wanted to stay but had to head back to camp for baked fish, cole slaw and pickled beets. The little bit of wind was the ticket. The other boat found a similar spot around 4PM and hammered out about 40 fish in 1 hour. Still fishing 1/2 a crawler or leaches although tonight with the wind the spinner with a orange/yellow floater did fabulous. Otherwise the bare hook also doing well in the 12 to 16 foot depth. Other guys in camp say they have been doing well in shallow water but our definition of well is from a different viewpoint.

Tomorrow the weather sounds about the same with maybe a little stronger wind from the south so hopefully we should be in for some of the same. Although we did not have the numbers today, we had may fish in and over the slot. Our boat ended up the day with 62 fish (most all caught in about 2 hours) and the other boat did 130 for today, which was fabulous for fish not biting.

Day 4 on Lost Lake: Fished local again today with a short stint up the river before noon. The weather did not disappoint us today and the south winds continued thru the night and thru the entire day. Not too bad with winds from the south at about 10 to 12 MPH at their peak.

We again did very well in the early AM starting around 7 but by 8:00 things shut down again. But during that time we hit one point were the wind was coming in and pick up 35 fish right away. Then ventured up the river for some current fishing and did OK but the size was not there like we had experienced earlier in the week.

After lunch the wind picked up and we had some mild white caps coming into the Sand Banks. We had fished this area earlier in the week with no success but today the wind made all the difference. At the height of the white caps we were pulling fish left and right with a considerable improvement in size. As soon as the winds died down so did the fishing.

None the less we ended up the best fishing day of the week so far with 232 fish in our boat and the other boat in our group had about the same. Many fish in and above the slot. It never did rain like they predicted but just as well. Sounds like tomorrow we are in for some rain but will see. The trick is to get out there when the conditions are right and no sleeping in late! Tomorrow is our last day and we are looking forward to some of the same success. Enjoyed our last meal of fish soup and our party is now filled up.

Tomorrow we go for the big fish and continued improvement to our numbers but starting to run low on bait, not that that's a bad thing! Anybody that tells you that Gulp outfishes live bait is lying to you. Our group has experimented with it extensively this week and in our opinion it is only better than nothing. When the fish are biting wild, you can catch fish with it but that's about it.

Day 6 on Lost Lake - Our last day. The weather man pulled another one on us. It was suppose to rain but never really did. At first is was heavy clouds and by noon we were sweating bullets. Winds were mostly calm and fishing was slow and the hot spots of yesterday and even earlier in the week were now mostly dead. We managed to do OK and had 71 fish in our boat and 40 in the other boat. Had several nice ones over the slot and most of the others nice.

Totals for the week: 678 for our boat and 598 for the other boat. Biggest walleye for the week was 27-1/2" and we had three 27". Biggest northern 34". Did not catch a lot of northerns as in past years. Biggest smallmouth was 1-1/2". All in all we had a good week although fishing was challenging at times with weird weather. Already thing about next year.

We got back on 7/1, we found fishing to be very good they were in the rocks feeding on crayfish, and the action was fast. As I mentioned in an earlier post we fish the taylor area. The mayflies started showing up on Wednesday, no affect on fishing yet. Leeches were our primary bait due to all of our crawlers croaking on day two, crwlers did seem better though while we had them. The fish we found were between 4-12 feet. Good luck!!

Fished Lac Seul out of Mahkwa Lodge for five days (Aug 7-11, 2012). There were 22 guys in 8 boats with most boats in the 75-100+ fish a day all but one day (due to storm front). Largest boat total for the week was 141. Everyone on the trip caught at least a 23" walleye with many in the 25-26" range. Largest was 28.5" this year. Water temp was up and the fish were a little deeper than in past years with most being caught in the 28-38 foot range.

We go every year at that time in August and it is always good fishing. We're always looking for guys to come with... PM me if you want to come with us, we usually have room for 1-2 more.
