We have had quite a bit of snow early this year that really slowed down our ice production, but after a few nights at -30F lower manitou has finally frozen all the way over. The stretch by the camp was froze last week, but it took a week more to cover the big lake.

The lake isn't safe by any means yet, but things are really improving.

New Year's Trout and Northern fishing was good out on Barker Bay on the Lower Manitou! The photos below are from last weekend.

Ice conditions today are about 12 inches in Barker Bay and 6 inches out towards Sandpiper and the opening to the Stretch. There are some areas of slush but only a few inches deep. Fishermen today did well.

We had fishermen out on the lake today, the trout fishing is a bit slower than the first two weekends but they did pretty well anyway. The slush is in pockets, some not bad and some about 8 inches deep or so. The ice out on the big lake was 13-14 inches deep. Snow today with a brisk wind, forecast calls for subzero temps in the next few days.

Condtions are very bad with slush right now. I just had a group that fished Dogfly and tried to fish the Manitou but there was too much slush. Dogfly was slush from one end to the other and never got out of it the entire trip. They had 2 smaller machines with and they were stuck everyday. Sleds with high power got around ok when not towing, but you need waterproof boots when fishing.

There is a lot of snow in the bush and on the lake now and yes there is slush. My fishermen report some spots not too bad and some spots 10-12 inches or so deep. Some got stuck a time or two but they were able to find places to fish without standing in water.

A few photos of fishing Jan 27-31

Ice fishing/slush conditions went from some of the worst in recent years to some of the best in just a week. Here are some pictures from some guys that were up this past weekend. If you put off your trout trip earlier this year, now is the time to get up here. If anyone has questions about conditions in the area, just let me know.

we are coming up 2/27 for 5 days and one of the guys asked about using a camera. Is the water clear enough to use a camera?? As this is our first trip ice fishing on L.M., can anyone let use know what has been working for hooks and bait??? Thanks.

The conditions are great right now, we are building ice each night so it looks like we will easily go into the first weekend of april with safe ice. Travel on all the lakes in the area is good right now and fishing has been good on the Manitou Stretch, Dogfly, Alonghill, and James. Here are some more ice fishing pictures. full-3139-6174-andy1.jpg

Hi Andy,

The water is defiantly clear enough to use one, however you are going to be down 45-80fow and it will be really dark, so that may be your issue.

I have some guys from Cabelas coming up to test some new products this weekend as well as do a little filming and I know they will also be bringing a color underwater camera to try.

Some of the best trout lures right now are just simpley a 1/2oz jig head with a white or glow tube, Northland Slurpie Jerk shad in White shad or Silver Shad are also good. Heddon Rattl' Sonar in the white/blue pattern. Simple bucktail jigs with a minnow head on them. On your second line just run a tipup with a cisco on it.

Good Luck on your trip,

Matt

The Cabelas guys will be leaving camp Monday Morning. I am sure if you got up early on monday and came down to camp, they would be more than willing to chat with you. If you do run down and they are already gone, and you want to do some fishing, just fish off our flag pole or just to the ease side of the island just north of the camp. You will see holes already drilled in the area. These two locations have been really hot the past couple of weekends.

Are you going to be on the water on Sunday or just arriving late sunday?

Craig,

She is doing great, just got back from a couple of sport shows and I think she got more people to book a trip than I have in the past couple of years;) The people really like a newborn, I couldn't believe the attention she got. I will post some new pictures of her next time I download the camera.

Thanks for asking about her.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
