Auger help

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I have a Jiffy Stealth STX 9" 3hp auger and I've been having problems with it lately. It starts up fine and when I drill, it just tries to die then I let go of the throttle and then it is running good but if I keep drilling and holding the throttle it dies.

So I'm just wondering what the cause could be? Could it be the Carb that its dirty and I need to clean it out? I'm no small engine genius so any help will be appreciated. I would like to get out again this week before I head back for school. Thanks guys and be safe out on the ice!

if its smoking and flooding itself out when full throttle then the carb needs to be cleaned. if its not smoking and then dien i would say you have a dirty fuel line or something in that order good luck and be safe..

could be the breather on the fuel cap is plugged too. you can run the auger and unscrew the fuel cap to see if thats the problem. ive got an old auger with a manual breather, if i forget to open it mine will do exactly the same thing.

otherwise if you can get the fuel line off at the carb, blow thru it, then dump the fuel to get any dirt out. could be in the carb to. i dont know what they have for adjustments on the carb, on my old one id just screw out the high idle adjustment a little bit to see if that helps.

i have the same auger and had the same problem. i would either have to only use it at 3/4 throttle or push the primer as i was drilling (not real easy). i think the same as dan z said with the fuel line or carb, like it is not getting enough fuel. i took mine in and got the carb cleaned and adjusted and they also put in a new float. i think it cost about 50 bucks (was last year) and i have had no problems since. if you go back out again try just going 3/4 throttle and hopefully that will get you by untill you can get it tuned up for next year. hope this helps, good luck and stay safe.

If you can choke or prime it when it acts up and it runs better then you have a lack of fuel problem. If it loads up and floods then its to rich. Either way you'll adjust the High speed mixture. The process is to find the correct spot by listening to the RPMs and leaving the adjustment screw on the on the rich side just past the peak RPMs.

Start with venting the gas cap.

Check the fuel line for air leaks.

Next step you'll adjust the High Speed mixture.

You'll see two red caps on the carb body. There will be an

H and L. H for High, L for Low.

Since its idling fine leave the Low speed alone.

Remove the red cap to access the High Speed mixture screw.

Turn that screw(clockwise)in till it just seats. Do not screw it in tight. As you turned it it you'll count the turns. It'll be around 3/4 to 1 full turn. Turn the H speed screw back out to its original position. Start the engine, you'll make very small adjustments(counterclockwise)till the engine runs without stalling or lack power. You'll turn that screw out(very small adjustments) till the RPMs start to drop. Turn back in till the RPMs begin to climb but not till it hits its peak RPMs.

Its now time to test and further adjust with a load.

For you that'll be drilling holes.

It it idles and starts fine you won't need to adjust the Low speed. It it idles good but starts hard or takes choke or priming to keep running while cold then you'll need to adjust the Low speed. If the mixture lean you'll want to turn the L speed screw out till the RPMs peak. Then turn the adjustment screw out just till the RPMs start to drop. That is where you want your idle speed to ensure it'll start in sub zero weather, if it lean it'll be a hard starter. When you all done with that you might need to adjust your Idle speed stop screw to get an idle just to where there auger shaft stops rotating.

If adjusting the High Speed mixture isn't getting good results its time to clean the carb and replace the inlet needle and seat along with diaphragms.

Or if your leaking fuel or notice excessive raw fuel dripping from the carb or muffler you have a inlet valve that is not metering the gas. That would be from debris or improper fuel level setting.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
