Id like to use one of these in the winter and think that the thicker (3"+) the better to stay further from the cold, or do the thinner ones work ok (comfort)? are some better than others such as material used etc..? I may use on a cot too..?

I have one that is 2.5 inches thick and has insulation inside, too. Not as light as one without but much warmer in the winter. I used to use a closed cell foam pad and an air mattress in the winter. I think if you are going to use just one or the other, you'd be better off using the closed cell pad. Better insulation from the cold than an air only mattress.

One more thing I should add, try to find one that is non-slip. Keeps you from sliding to the end of the tent when even on a small incline.

I believe all of the self inflating mats have foam in them. They are much different, and better, then the air only inflatables.

REI usually has them on sale in May. Several different thicknesses to choose from and you can lay down and try them out in the store; bring your own rocks smile

BTW, Cabelas also has some nice ones. The Thermarest brand has the first with them, but they are more money. I have both Thermarest and REI and like the REI much better.
