hunting/hiking boots. WTB?

slick2526

Question

I want to get a pair of boots to use when hiking in the hot summer and also for hunting in the cold fall mornings.

I want the boot to be gortex, atleast 8 inches tall, very comfortable in walking or sitting, and would prefer the whole boot to be leather.

Any suggestions on a brand and model of boot? Also is 800 grams on insulation going to be to much or do I want to stick around 600 grams?

I bought a pair of danner low cut hunting boots, but I wear them as hiking boots. They are only 6" I think though. The danner frontier line, but they are 6" high though. I wore mine all upland season. they are goretex and finally are broken in....

Get a pair of Danners. Best boots out there. I'd get either the frontiers or pronghorns. You wont be happy using the same boot for hot summer hiking and cold fall hunting though. Thats a best of both worlds kind of thing. I'd go uninsulated pronghorns for summer and 800 gram frontiers for fall. Just my opinion. Let us know what you get.

I would agree that you should avoid insulation. Your feet will be very uncomfortable in the summer if they have any insulation.

For fall I would wear a sock liner and a thicker sock to achieve the right amount of insulation.

Even in the summer you will want to have a boot liner made of polypro or coolmax and then a light sock like smartwool or similar. They are soft, breathable and won't be too heavy on your feet.

Danners are great. I have a pair of Red Wings that I really like. Also check out true hiking boots at a store like Midwest Mointaineering or REI. They have a great return policy and you can get any of the sock combos.

Make sure to try them on wearing the heaviest socks you plan on using.
