Steve Foss
Luvs, since we're talking Canon lenses already available so you'll be buying body only, and new, your price range indicates either the XS or the XSi. Take a look at an online retailer like B&H Camera to compare features. Don't pay any attention to megapixel count. The difference between 10 and 12 Mp is too small to matter. The XS runs about $525, the XSi about $650, give or take. You'll need to buy a memory card, which is not included in the camera, and it's a very good idea to buy a second battery for backup (SterlingTek is a great battery outlet with excellent batteries at far below Canon OEM prices). Given that extra cash outlay, you may end up with the XS.As you compare features between the two bodies, if you want feedback on whether some of those differences matter much in the real world, post away with your questions and we'll give you our perspectives. Luvsoutdoors
Thanks so much, have had this idea for a while but will take my time researching, you've been a big help already.
Steve Foss
That's what we're here for. Have fun with the research. The anticipation in figuring out which gift to buy sometimes is nearly as much fun as watching the person's eyes light up when they get it. MN Shutterbug
Yup, what Dan said. With digital, you don't have to worry about the cost every time you click the shutter. That makes it much more enjoyable and you can do a lot more experimenting. Pick one up and have a blast.
