Finally a place for morels

It's always both for me, but if I find a good patch the walleye rod get's a break. Another month or so and it will be prime tiime up my way.

Just a question for the newbie to MN morel hunting. I've always found them in black dirt when I lived in IL. I live around a very sandy area now. Do they still grow in the wooded areas even if the ground is almost all sand? Thanks for any info.....

Where I live it's all sugar sand and the morels still grow well in it. Anyone go up by lake winne some of my best spots are up there. I brought my wife up there and walk in to where I shot my bear and found the motherload a few years back. The best part is you can start south and move north as they grow.

Hey sniper thanks for the reply. At least I can walk the woods with some confidence now, knowing that there should be some there.

Morels will grow in just about any soil conditions. I've even found them in the middle of a bone dry gravel road. Of course, there was a dead elm in the ditch. Moisture is generally the key, but once in a while a stray will pop up in dry conditions.

I have been out several time and have been blanked. Its been about 15 yrs since I looked for them, but this yr its pretty dry. How much does this effect it??

If it's dry enough you will only find few to none...it may very well be done for this year...a good rain would tell the tale...
