Have always wondered if anyone has "ever" found gold in any of the creeks, rivers, streams gravel pits in the north country(like they're going to tell you anyways..lol! grin).....I realize gold was found near Lake vermillion back in the 1860's but not worth mining.....another old mine on the vermilion river near Crane Lake area...sure would be nice to find a few grains of the yellow stuff!....maybe try a metal detector ....just curious as to who may have had the "gold fever"!

Wow!.....now that would be a worthy find!....The area has greenstone that holds gold connected to Canada's greenstone deposits.....just never hear much about any prospecting anywhere in the area......just get out and spend some time looking is thee answer...If a guy find some, I'm sure he's certainly not going to be advertising it! grin

For the longest time I would watch the Massey brothers on the Outdoor Channel. During some of their advertisements, there would be maps that they would show with areas in Sibley County as having gold.:) Sure would be nice to find the Mother Load.

There is some to find up in the ely area. The mining researchers have been doing some work looking for deposits up there in the past few years and they did find a little right around town. Just not enough to open a new mine up. I would bet in the shagwa river that there is a few flakes to be found.

pyrite flakes? I'm skeptical. Would be interesting to ask a geologist familiar with Minnesota's geological formations and history. I'm sure there is some there, but like has been said, nothing worth spending more than a little recreational time on.
