polarsusd81
Other than Strawberries, what kinds of fruit would I be able to plant in a small garden. My little boy is getting to the age where he wants to help me around the house and yard and I thought this year would be good to get something small going for him to help out with.Thanks. polarsusd81
Yeah, I don't think there is much I could really do other than strawberries for fruits. Oh well, those are one of his favorites anyway.
Quetico
Avoid raspberries. They are too aggressive for residential gardens. They spread and take over too quickly. Its very difficult to control them.

Bobby Bass
not fruit but carrots are a great little kid thing to grow along with radishes.
JeffB
Well we planted rasberries and strawberries and yes the rasberries are spreading, but produced a ton of fruit compared to the strawberries. I think the rasberries are great. The rasberries were put in a narrow strip along the south side of our garage. We also planted apple trees and pear trees, but I'm out of the pear business after replanting twice.
nofishfisherman
We planted melons last year. We only did 2 plants and we got a smaller variety out of the Seed Saver catalog. Probably took up a space about 3x3 or so with some tentacles branching out a in other directions. You can train the tentacles though.Didn't get a ton of yield out of them, maybe 3-4 melons but it was our first year trying them and was fun to try something different. lovebigbluegills
I've had decent luck with cantaloupes...they usually end up being a little bigger than a softball, with the occasional one being a little smaller than a volleyball. But do they have fantastic flavor...WOW!!!!I haven't had much luck with watermelons
Fish Toys
Maybe he wants to try and grow a giant pumpkin? Dills Giant Atlantic. Wouldn’t take too much room.
lovebigbluegills
Darn good idea Fish Toys...pinch off all the buds but one. Those Dills are a heck of a variety to grow big ones. For some reason this past year, only one turned orange and the rest of them stayed yellow. I left them on the vine until the day before Halloween when the neighbor kids got their pick. CMKURT
Go with Blueberries, Some varieties only get 18 to 24" tall. Just have to acidfy the soil & mulch. They have a shallow root system if you till to close you can kill them. They also do well in a foundation planting not needing to take up garden space.
