I use a deal that has a solid plastic cylinder and about 4 feet of tubing on it. You siphon water out and clean out the gunk and gravel. How often depends on what's going on in the tank. If the weeds start to die you have to clean them out cause that decomp causes the chemistry of the water to go kaflooey. I have a well so I can suck out 10-15 gallons and just drop in new well water. The side of the tank may need some scribbing with a long handled brush every could of weeks but that depends on whether the lights are on too long. You have to sort of play it by ear and learn as you go. I seldom have minnows die in part because I only get a scoop a week or so and if they're around for more than 3 days I feed them some of the flake fish food every day. You know things are going to disappear about 5 minutes after the lights go out and you hear a lot of splashing in the tanke. Dinner time!!
