Reports for May 8th Wknd

Weekend report (lake fishin'):

Friday night two of us hit Yellow. On the water about 5:30, water temp was in the low 50's. We were pitching 1/4 oz jigs and fatheads, and some Gulp on weedlines in 5-9 ft. No luck until just about sundown when we picked up about 10 fish, one of which was 15. Some of these were on bobbers , but the jigs took most.

Saturday we went to Minong and caught 30+ eyes for the day. Water was warmer. Early in the day the fish were relating to thick weedbeds in 4-5 feet, sitting right on the edge like pike and nailing jigs (we went down to 1/8 and 1/16, orange was the ticket). Got a 15 and a 17 doing that, and many 14s, pike, a couple smallies, and one huge crappie.

At about 11 am we moved to 10-11 feet in the stumps and started catching fish there, along with decent crappies mixed in. Slip bobbers and fatheads with red or orange on the terminal end. Non stop action until about 2 when the sun got real hot. A few hours later they fired up again, and we finished out there with a 15, 17 and 18 along with many, many smaller fish and crappies. It was a blast.

Good luck everyone.

Went up to Balsam Lake to pre-fish for our club tournament on Sunday. I never realized that lake gets pounded so hard. There were bass boats all over (I'm guilty as well). I love to fish tournaments and I have fun but maybe this is starting to get out of control. Or maybe Minnesota should open their lakes earlier so that the pressure over here isn't so overwhelming the first couple weeks in May.

Anyway, I had a few decent bass going in 7-11 ft in the weeds on a jig and there are some feeding in the shallows, but most I caught were 10-13 inches. The Balsam Lake open was on Sat, so I went to watch the weigh-in. There were some nice fish with one weighing at 5lbs on the nose.

If you think Balsam is busy now, just wait until the 22nd. The fishers of men tournament last year had close to 70 boats out there. That was the minnesota and wisconsin division combined. This year it will be the minnesota east and minnesota west at the same time. Both dividions will average about 45-50 boats. They are going to limit it to around 60 or 70 total though for this one I hope. Thats a lot of boats, especially at this time of year when the lake fishes a lot smaller then what it really is.
