Shocking Batteries back

hovermn

Question

I have 2 190 amp/hr batteries in the fish house, and I think that they're starting to get sulfer build up on the plates. They just don't seem to hold the charge that they did last year. Does anyone around the metro have the ability to shock batteries of this size back? Also, after doing so, would it be fine, or not such a great idea to wire them back up in Parallel? This is how they're left now, and charged the same way.

I ask because I've heard that while charging batteries in parallel, they need to be of the same type, and capacity ability. I worry that after they're de-sulfered, one may come out better than the other

Do a google search on deep cycle batteries and you'll find stuff by a guy who's name is Ken Darden. Every time I try to post the link the FM boogeyman takes it out. Anyway, spend some time reading the stuff he's written and you'll learn a lot about batteries.

Northern Tool has a fairly cheap little jobberdo that does it also. I have one. I can't say that I know it works cause I haven't had any things that were dead come back to life, but since I haven't had anything die maybe that's a + anyway.

I've seen that you can buy desulficationers, and my buddy has a charger that says it does it, but I wasn't sure if they'd work on such large batteries, or if I'd have to find someone with, or buy special equipment for them. They're 190 amp/hr each, and weigh around 110 lbs each. They're huge!

Think the consumer units will still work with these monsters?

Interesting. Mine are 14"X16"X7" and 110 lbs each. They're used in commercial floor scrubbers. Definately not something you'd find in a boat. Just wanted to clarify that I don't have batteries that you'd find at your local marina or Gander.

They're similar to this: US 185 XC

But, if the consumer model handled yours... Maybe I'll give it a shot?

I doubt it. I just hooked mine up after being reminded by this thread. Sounds like you have some industrial size rigs. Maybe check with someone that has forklifts or something and see if they could do it for a small fee?

I guess I'm not sure what that is. I'm using an IOTA converter/charger. Here's what it says about my charger:

It allows the DLS charger to operate as an automatic 4-stage "smart charger". This gives the customer the benefit of Bulk, Absorption, and Float stage charging, increasing the charging capacity of the DLS charger and decreasing charge times, insuring proper and safe battery charging and minimizing over-charging.

This "smart" technology monitors the battery at all times. If the DLS voltage remains in the long term float stage for more than 7 days, the IQ-4 will automatically deliver a boost charge for a predetermined time (180 minutes), then automatically return to the normal float stage.

I'd think that this would have been enough to keep them in tip top shape.
