hand auger problems

I have a SM moura auger that is several years old and it has never seemed to drill right. when you get it going it will dance all over the place leaving you with a very ugly hole. it also cuts very tough...

would replacing the blades fix both problems..any advice from hand auger users would be greatly appreciated.

.....or it could just be opperator error...lol

Those Mora augers are very finicky with the blades...even a very small nick that you cant really see can inhibit it from cutting holes. Never touch a Mora blade to anything but the ice on the hole that you are about to cut. For example, if you have a little frozen ice on the bottom on the auger - dont ever hit it on the ice to try to knock it off. I also had mine leaning against the side of the fish house - with the blades resting gently on the fish house carpeted floor - the blade got a little nick somehow or just got bent ever so slightly and it was done as far as cutting any holes. Replace the blades - and try again. A good working Mora should dig right in right away and start shaving a hole right away. I can cut a hole with a 7 inch Mora almost as fast as cutting one with my 10 inch gas strikemaster.

I can't seem to find it but there was a post on here about the exact thing. Mora augers have a small metal shim that is placed between the blades and the auger itself. The shims have to be used or the blades will not be at the correct angle and the auger will not cut good even with sharp blades. Check your auger to see if the shims are present or not. If not, someone had mentioned they made shims out of an ice cream bucket lid. You would have to look at an auger that has the shims to see how wide they need to be.

Check gander and fleet farm. They are around ten or twenty and you won't pay shipping or have to wait for them. If you have the money I would get the better auger but if you just want to make it through the year, get the blades.
