Fished Lake Owen in Bayfield County with tip-ups for pike. Quick-strike rigs and big golden shiners in 5 to 15 feet at one spot on the west shore of the western "ear" and one spot near the narrows.

Three flags from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. One very heavy fish worked loose before it hit the hole. Never got a look at her. One broke a leader when I set the hook. The leader had rusted and weakened. I finally caught the third, a 2 pounder that even now is becoming pike fingers for supper.

Two guys showed up about 1 p.m. with tip-ups and said they'd been at Nelson Lake near Hayward and had lots of flags, but each time the pike had dragged the hook into the timber, and they broke off every time. These guys were using single treble hooks and lighter line than I was, and they had to wait before setting the hook, giving the pike time to hit the woods. Think I'll take my 30-lb line and quick-strike rigs and head to Nelson tomorrow and stare at tip-ups near some wood, then get ready for the evening walleye bite. wink.gif

Will be good to do a little preliminary scouting for the Nelson Lake outing next month, too. grin.gif

Fished three spots on Nelson Lake in Sawyer County today. No flags at all, but that was mostly my fault. I was fishing three tip-ups with 10- to 12-inch suckers looking for big pike.

Probably should have stuck with two tips and broken out the crappie rod for the day, then switched to lighter tip-ups for the evening walleye bite, but that's life. grin.gif

Fished a hit-or-miss spot on St. Louis Bay near the shipping channel in Superior for 'eyes.

Tonight was a miss. Two guys, one small pout. Wind 20 mph, zero degrees, auger blades iced up, pushed auger down hard, buried air intake in water, glug glug glug, killed. Lost the cell phone and had to go back out after dark looking for it in the blowing snow and the blue glow of my Aurora Tech. No cell phone.

Turned out it was in my coat pocket.

It's STILL better than working. grin.gif

And the new Dyna glo heater kept the Trap II very toasty, even in that wind, with slush sealing the tent. wink.gif

Hey Condor:

Good to see you back in cyberspace. You and Jar coming to Burntside by Ely Feb. 8/9 for the big FM get-together and laker fishing excursion?

Today's fishing report: Three guys with nine tip-ups fished Minnesuing in Douglas County, on both sides of the saddle that separates the south bay from the rest of the lake. Fished from 10 to 1. Not a single flag.

Pulled up stakes and headed to nearby St. Croix (Gordon) Flowage. Set up in about 7 feet off a point. Had seven flags from 2:30 to 4 p.m., with a tripleheader just after 3 p.m. Smallest pike half a pound, biggest 5 pounds. All but one flag came on dead smelt.

Planning on going back tomorrow to the same spot and spending the whole day. Can you say "flag up!"

Fished the St. Croix Flowage near Gordon for the second day in a row. Did better this time.

Three tip-ups off a point on the flowage's south shore. Ten flags, caught seven pike, kept five, all 2-3 pounds. No big ones.

Had three fish on the ice by 9:15 and figured I'd be off the ice by noon, but it turned into the Dead Sea, with no flags until 12:15 and no other fish on the ice until 2:30, then it was hot for an hour and I left. Have to stay next time in hopes of an evening waldo bite.

Didn't mind the dead hours too bad. Watched an eagle hunt, crows fight over thrown out bait, and a pair of otters a quarter mile away play on the ice and in the water where current kept a hole open. It ain't all about fishing, after all. grin.gif

Smelt was the hot bait. Eight of the ten flags came on smelt, with two on a live golden shiner.

Haven't fished Bone for years. Used to for perch and panfish. There are several lakes very near there with better fishing. Depends on which ones are hot and when. Also depends on what you are fishing for...I am strictly a panfisherman.

You can catch alot of little perch but not much bigger then about 9 inches.
Last year they were cathing crappies in front of Wilkins resort just before dark in 20 feet of water. That is what a friend told me so take it for what it is worth.
Good Jigging

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
