Each game comes with a set of achievements that each have a nominal value. Most games come with 1000 total achievement points. Some are very easy to get, others are very difficult. Some require a stroke of luck (like the "beat the maker" achievements, you have to be lucky enough to randomly match a creator of the game over Live). The overall score really doesn't mean much other than how much time you spend or how many games you own. The individual achievements more or less would show your skill.
